Below are highlights from Summer 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">No filter needed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Tyler Sanchez \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was awarded a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imaginingamerica.org\/what-we-do\/fellowships\/jgs-fellows\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Joy of Giving Something Fellowship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from Imagining America. The annual award recognizes u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ndergraduate students who actively serve their local communities through photography or media arts.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> The program is aimed at elevating photography and digital media as pathways for undergraduates to pursue careers and make a difference in their communities. During the fellowship year, Sanchez will receive a $2,000 tuition scholarship, obtain mentorship and financial support for a community project, attend Imagining America\u2019s National Gathering in fall 2022 through complimentary registration and travel awards, participate in virtual learning exchanges, and join the consortium\u2019s national network of scholars, artists, and community organizers. At Macalester, Sanchez studies psychology, English, and media and cultural studies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A German exchange<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduates <\/span><b>Audrey Kellar \u201922 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Grace Armon \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were two of 75 Americans selected to study and work in Germany as part of the yearlong <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/exchanges.state.gov\/us\/program\/congress-bundestag-youth-exchange\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. While in Germany, Kellar and Armon will attend a two-month intensive language course, study at a German university and complete internships in genetic counseling and public health, respectively. Participants are usually placed with host families throughout Germany, where they act as citizen ambassadors of the United States, promoting a positive image of the U.S. abroad and creating lifelong friendships and professional connections to keep German-American relations strong.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pipe dreams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester won second place in their division in the largest pipe band competition in the United States \u2014 the Chicago Scottish Festival and Highland Games. <\/span><b>Mike Breidenbach \u201996<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the director of piping at Macalester, accepted the win on the band\u2019s behalf. Students <\/span><b>Zippa Curiskis \u201925<\/b> and <b>Rhys O\u2019Higgins \u201824<\/b>, as well as alumna <strong>Meridith Richmond \u201812<\/strong>, are members<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;in the band.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connecting through street art<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Elissa Cedarleaf Dahl \u201901 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was awarded a Fulbright to study murals and street art in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Medell\u00edn, Colombia. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fulbrightteacherexchanges.org\/programs\/da\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright Distinguished Awards in Teaching Research Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides opportunities for U.S. educators to research and explore topics of educational significance in a foreign country and incorporate their findings into their school and community upon returning to the U.S.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cedarleaf Dahl teaches art at Justice Page Middle School in Minneapolis. \u201cAfter the murder of George Floyd, our city responded with murals and public art on practically every building and every street,\u201d she said. \u201cWe are now a mural city, much like Medell\u00edn, Colombia, and the voice of our people is being broadcast through our public art.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her research project will investigate intersections between Medell\u00edn and Minneapolis\u2019 mural arts movement and create a collaborative curriculum for community muralism projects and histories in Medell\u00edn and Minneapolis.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hollywood adapts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">English professor and department chair <\/span><b>Peter Bognanni<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s book <\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/547152\/things-im-seeing-without-you-by-peter-bognanni\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Things I\u2019m Seeing Without You<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/alyssa-milano-things-im-seeing-without-you-ae-studios-peter-farrelly-1235292496\/?fbclid=IwAR1_F59rxp3U3Ef4kVp5OQMhhlK1g0r8LU3OqALvPxEVck9FAmylEkVDiW8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">adapted for television<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by A+E Studios. The book tells the story of a teenage girl coping with her boyfriend\u2019s suicide. Alyssa Milano will pen the TV series adaptation with Oscar-winner Peter Farrelly directing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An academic grand slam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twelve athletic teams were recognized for stellar academic performance and high grade point averages. For the second year in a row, the <\/span><b>softball team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recorded the highest team grade point average among all NCAA softball programs across all divisions. The Scots turned in a team GPA of 3.851 for the 2021-22 academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>men\u2019s basketball team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the National Association of Basketball Coaches\u2019 Team Academic Excellence Award.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">were both named Scholar All-America Teams by the College Swimming Coaches of America Association. The men\u2019s team posted a 3.73 team GPA for the spring semester to rank tied for fifth among NCAA Division III men\u2019s swimming and diving teams. The women&#8217;s team recorded a 3.76 team GPA, which is tied for fourth in Division III. Both teams also recorded the highest team GPAs among MIAC members.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>men\u2019s track and field team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received All-Academic Team recognition from the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, ending the season with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.615.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>women\u2019s basketball team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> earned a spot on the Women\u2019s Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Honor Roll. The Scots ranked second in Division III, registering a GPA of 3.763.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The cumulative GPA for the <\/span><b>women\u2019s golf team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> ranked second among all Division III women\u2019s golf programs during the 2021-22 academic year, according to the Women&#8217;s Golf Coaches Association. The Scots registered a 3.819 collective team GPA.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>women\u2019s track and field team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received All-Academic Team recognition from the U.S. Track &amp; Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, ending the season with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.693.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>volleyball team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the Team Academic Award from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. This the 12th consecutive year that the Scots have earned the honor, which recognizes teams for their academic achievement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><b> water polo team <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received the All-Academic Team Award from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches after posting the eighth-highest team grade-point average (3.67) among all women\u2019s collegiate water polo teams.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><b> men\u2019s soccer team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the Team Academic Award from the United Soccer Coaches after posting the highest team grade point average among all men\u2019s college soccer teams during the 2021-22 academic year. The Scots\u2019 GPA of 3.75 is tied with Stevens Institute of Technology for the highest GPA across all three NCAA Divisions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><b>women\u2019s soccer team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the Team Academic Award from the United Soccer Coaches after posting a 3.73 team grade point average during the 2021-22 academic year.
