Below are highlights from September 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bragging writes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Jake Mohan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a writing counselor and instructor in the Macalester Academic Excellence (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/max\/#\/0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MAX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) Center, received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/slacwpa.org\/index.php\/martinson-award-of-excellence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Martinson Award for Innovation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the Small Liberal Arts Colleges-Writing Program Administrators. Said the award committee: \u201cOver the past several years, MAX has championed the needs of multilingual writers and equitable writing practices through new tutor education materials and a revised mission statement. While many centers have engaged in antiracist practice with attention to multilingual writers, what impressed us most about the work of MAX is how it engaged faculty in changemaking.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mohan is a resource for faculty who aim to make their feedback on student writing more humane and inclusive. \u201cI appreciate the public recognition of the work we do in the MAX Center to make the college a more welcoming place for all students, especially for those who wish to develop their academic writing skills,\u201d said Mohan.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dance film honors those impacted by 9\/11<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Karen Charles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a visiting artist in the Theater and Dance Department, received the Best Music Video\/Performance award from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tvf.newyorkfestivals.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York City Film and Television Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for her dance film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of the Ashes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The production was Charles\u2019 first foray into the collaboration between concert dance and film.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of the Ashes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> honors those impacted by 9\/11 and asks whether we can resurrect a better way of living from this tragic event,\u201d she said. \u201cThis piece was originally commissioned by the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts for a live performance piece. Covid serendipitously necessitated re-imagining this work via film.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking center stage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">History professor <\/span><b>Katrina Phillips<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tla-online.org\/awards\/bookawards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2021 George Freedley Memorial Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the Theatre Library Association for her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uncpress.org\/book\/9781469662312\/staging-indigeneity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">book<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Staging Indigeneity: Salvage Tourism and the Performance of Native American History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The $500 award honors exemplary work in the field of live theater or performance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy love for theater is partly what drove me to write this book,\u201d Dr. Phillips said. \u201cI trained as a dancer and as an actor before becoming a historian, so having the ability to combine my work as a historian with my knowledge of the performing arts allowed me to shape this book in a way that spoke to who I am both within and outside of academia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Enriching institutional equity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Reverend Kelly Stone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, chaplain and associate dean of the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, was selected for the inaugural cohort of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedseminary.edu\/lcsj\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leadership for Social Justice Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. This tuition-free nine-month continuing education program assists clergy in developing and deepening contextually-sensitive, sustainable, and community-based ministries in social justice. The program will support Rev. Stone in reflection and action designed to enrich her work in institutional equity at Macalester.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work done through this cohort will be context based, meaning Macalester will be a site for exploration and implementation of learning,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Elevating Black women\u2019s stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Ebony Aya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, program manager for the Jan Serie Center for Scholarship and Teaching, published a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ayamediapublishingllc.com\/products\/let-the-black-women-say-ase-pre-order\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Let the Black Women Say Ase\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a collection of essays, short stories, and poetry from more than 20 Black women.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs\u00e9 is a word of affirmation, of agreement, that the storytellers in this anthology give to each other,\u201d said Aya. \u201cRather than solely looking for that affirmation from the outside world, the storytellers gather together to share and bear witness to the life unfolding before them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book connects to a course Aya teaches at Macalester called Endarkened Feminist Epistemology. \u201cThe class focuses on the importance of Black women remembering ourselves and our spirituality,\u201d she said. \u201cThe book also relates to my work in the Serie Center in terms of expanding and transforming our pedagogy in such a way that dominant voices are not the central paradigm.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Holding court<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Gordon Gallagher \u201991<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/09\/02\/president-biden-names-twenty-sixth-round-of-judicial-nominees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nominated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by President Biden for the United States District Court for the District of Colorado.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lifting up other women at work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate<\/span><b> Catherine Brown \u201901<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, partner at Oliver Wyman Financial Services, was named in the 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heroes.involverolemodels.org\/poll\/2022-top-100-women-executives\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTop 100 Women Executives\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> list by INvolve, a consultancy and global network that focuses on diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Brown was recognized for her mentorship of and advocacy for women, as well as the company\u2019s ranking increase during her tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remarkable rankings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/best-colleges\/macalester-college-2358\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">US News &amp; World Report<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has again ranked Macalester among the top liberal arts colleges in the nation, including 9th for most innovative and 11th in undergraduate teaching.
