Below are highlights from October 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A light on Broadway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester alum <\/span><b>Mandi Masden \u201908<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has been cast as Ruth Younger in the Broadway revival of Lorraine Hansberry\u2019s American classic \u201cA Raisin in the Sun.\u201d The play opened to rave <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/25\/theater\/a-raisin-in-the-sun-review.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, including from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> theater critic Jesse Green.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Award-winning monkey business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Biology Professor <\/span><b>Robin Shields-Cutler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Maya Wills \u201921<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were co-authors on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1424-2818\/14\/9\/715\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">peer-reviewed research article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published in<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Diversity. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of her biology honors thesis in Dr. Shields-Cutler\u2019s laboratory, Wills analyzed gut microbiome samples from diverse primates at the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory to determine how the microbiomes compare between different species of primates, how these zoo-resident microbiomes look compared to those of wild primates, and how different environmental factors might influence these important microbial communities.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wills presented the work at several conferences, earning the Judges Choice Award for Outstanding Oral Presentation at the Minnesota Academy of Science <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnmas.org\/winchell-research-symposium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as well as a second place award at the North Central Meeting of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncb-asm.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Society for Microbiology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An A+ in educational studies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Professor<\/span><b> Walter Greason<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, chair of the history department, contributed to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/title\/38927?language=en\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encyclopedia of Critical Understandings of Latinx and Global Education<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a book that won the 2022 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/educationalstudies.org\/critics-choice-book-awards.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Critics\u2019 Choice Book Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the American Educational Studies Association. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book offers a critical perspective of the education of the Latinx populations around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis specific chapter illustrates the importance of mentorship in P-12 education, especially in the context of a national educational climate that sometimes seeks to marginalize large groups of students and their families,\u201d Dr. Greason said. \u201cI am most excited by the recognition of educational research as one of the most difficult areas of collaborative and interdisciplinary publication, demonstrating the importance of advanced, community-engaged scholarship in academe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Contrasting views on African issues<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DeWitt Wallace Professor of Geography <\/span><b>Bill Moseley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> co-edited a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Debating-African-Issues-Conversations-Under-the-Palaver-Tree\/Moseley-Otiso\/p\/book\/9780367201494\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Debating African Issues: Conversations Under the Palaver Tree. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The interdisciplinary collection covers 20 enduring and contemporary debates across a broad range of subjects affecting Africa, from development and health to agriculture, climate change, and urbanization.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe majority of the essay contributions are by African scholars, many of whom are based at African universities,\u201d Prof. Moseley said. \u201cBy elevating African voices in these debates, one gains a better and more nuanced understanding of these topics.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Moseley and co-editor Kefa Otiso shepherded the project \u201cbecause it relates directly to our teaching about Africa,\u201d Prof. Moseley said. \u201cReading contrasting views on controversial African issues helps students further develop their critical thinking skills, deepening their understanding of the topic, and developing a more nuanced perspective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One migrant\u2019s musical journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The world premiere performance of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Migration Story, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">composition by Professor<\/span><b> Randy Bauer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, department <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chair and associate professor of music, took place in the Mairs Concert Hall in the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center. This new work features 10 performers, including Bauer on piano, visiting jazz saxophonist extraordinaire Andrew Rathbun, and several members of the Minnesota Orchestra and Macalester\u2019s music faculty. Professor Mark Mandarano conducted the performance.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The work was written in response to numerous human migration events in recent years, and tells the story, across five movements and via music alone, of a child\u2019s journey from stability to uncertainty, and the resilience they bring to the situation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A civic engagement champion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Myrl Beam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, visiting assistant professor of Women\u2019s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, was selected as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectpericles.org\/periclean-faculty-leadership-pfl.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mellon Periclean Faculty Leader in the Humanities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a program supported by the Mellon Foundation and The Eugene M. Lang Foundation. Periclean Faculty Leaders are a community of scholars dedicated to incorporating civic engagement into the curriculum while empowering students to use their academic knowledge to tackle real-world problems. Project Pericles will provide a $4,000 grant for Dr. Beam to create and teach an innovative course in Spring 2023. Evaluators commented that applications were \u201cinspiring in their commitment to bridge liberal learning and community engagement\u201d and that the proposals \u201creflect both faculty talent and experience.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A timely Fulbright<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Elizabeth Poor \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received word that her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/us.fulbrightonline.org\/applicants\/types-of-awards\/study-research\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright Research\/Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> alternate status was changed to awarded. Poor will head to Uruguay in March 2023 to study abortion access and reproductive justice, a timely topic for residents of Uruguay and the United States alike. This status change raises the number of U.S. Student Fulbrights awarded to Macalester for the 2022-2023 cycle to nine. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2022\/04\/eight-mac-seniors-receive-2022-23-fulbright-awards\/\">Information about the other eight awards is available <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stellar student sociologists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two sociology majors received undergraduate awards in the annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socmn.org\/conference\/2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sociologists of Minnesota Caroline Rose Student Paper Competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><b>Josh Groven \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> earned first place for \u201c\u2018Cool People\u2019 vs. \u2018Food Goodness\u2019: Capitalist Grammar and Social Distinction at a St. Paul Restaurant and Salon.\u201d Second place went to <\/span><b>Haoxuan Gao \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for \u201cWork Above and Beyond: How Peer Tutors Navigate Their Role and Manage Emotional Labor.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Both students presented their research and received cash prizes and recognition at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.socmn.org\/2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">annual meeting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of Sociologists of Minnesota. Winners also received free conference registration, meals, and membership in Sociologists of Minnesota.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Moving mountains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.macalester.edu\/himalaya\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Himalaya<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies, was published at Macalester from 2008-2019. The publication, which has now transitioned to the Himalayan region, plans to feature Macalester\u2019s contributions in its next issue and a photo of the library on its cover. While based at Mac, the journal grew significantly in scope and content.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Jacki Betsworth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, retired librarian, helped lead the project: \u201cMy role was to provide the organizational and technical expertise that would allow us to create a sustainable workflow and support publication of future issues,\u201d she said. Anthropology Professor <\/span><b>Arjun Guneratne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> served as editor. Students helped bring the journal to life. \u201cThey gained valuable experience in publication tools, graphic design, and project management,\u201d Betsworth said. \u201cThey also enjoyed a unique opportunity to collaborate on a high quality publication project that was of value to an international community and whose reach was global.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI loved my experience working on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Himalaya<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d said <\/span><b>Jessica Del Fiacco \u201816<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThe skills I gained as a student editorial assistant \u2014 from layout design to time management \u2014 helped prepare me for my career in communications.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ethics of driverless vehicles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Philosophy Professor <\/span><b>Diane Michelfelder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Test-Driving-Future-Autonomous-Technological-Philosophy\/dp\/1786613239\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2OJ357IMOPR20&amp;keywords=michelfelder+test+driving+the+future&amp;qid=1666293553&amp;qu=eyJxc2MiOiIxLjgwIiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ%3D%3D&amp;sprefix=%2Caps%2C78&amp;sr=8-1&amp;ufe=app_do%3Aamzn1.fos.d977788f-1483-4f76-90a3-786e4cdc8f10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Test-Driving the Future: Autonomous Vehicles and the Ethics of Technological Change. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the development of autonomous vehicles proceeds full speed ahead, it is often said that this new, disruptive form of transportation will change everything. \u201cI put the book together to make a contribution to the scholarship connected to the ethics of autonomous vehicles that would bring some underexplored issues into greater relief,\u201d Dr. Michelfelder said. \u201cI&#8217;m most enthusiastic about the exciting insights and perspectives that the contributors to the volume bring to the discussion of the ethics of autonomous vehicles.
