Below are highlights from November 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Professor emeritus receives Mongolia\u2019s highest honor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mongolian President Ukhnaa Khurelsukh <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20221124\/aa2222f3e77b46c7b0d25b7ee6e67b33\/c.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conferred the Order of Genghis Khan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the country\u2019s highest state award, to&nbsp; <\/span><b>Jack Weatherford<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DeWitt Wallace Professor of Anthropology, emeritus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This award recognizes those who have made contributions to strengthening national unity, deeply studying the history and culture of Mongolia, and familiarizing other countries with Mongolian culture. Dr. Weatherford, who wrote the 2004 book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, became the first foreigner to receive the honor.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was a long day of ceremony, from a private meeting with the President, marching through a lineup of Mongolian mounted horsemen, two concerts, all the way to a late night dinner with the prime minister in his home,\u201d Dr. Weatherford said. \u201cThe President ordered that a new portrait be painted of me and hung in the government palace. My mind is a jumble now. I have no words. Mongolians have given me so much more than I have given them.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bagging awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Zippa Curiskis \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> won Champion Supreme awards in both categories in Grade 1 (the highest amateur grade) from the Midwest Pipe Band Association. Curiskis won the \u201cLight Music\u201d and \u201cPiobaireachd\u201d categories. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to earn this honor because I am the first woman to win both titles in the same season,\u201d she said. \u201cI competed at five different bagpipe competitions, and my overall placings were the highest in Grade 1.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Think tank invitation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Political Science Professor <\/span><b>Andrew Latham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was named a senior fellow at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/peacediplomacy.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Institute for Peace and Diplomacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">nonprofit and non-partisan North American international affairs think tank in<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Ottawa, Canada. \u201cIt is a recognition of my public-facing international relations scholarship,\u201d Dr. Latham said. \u201cI will be part of an international network of scholars promoting a more restrained, less belligerent U.S. foreign policy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let\u2019s mock and roll<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s Forensics team swept St. Olaf\u2019s Ole Open mock trial tournament. Out of 21 teams, Macalester teams placed 1st, 2nd, and 4th. \u201cIt is exciting to have our whole program doing so well and highlights the depth of this year\u2019s talent,\u201d said <\/span><b>Lia Pak \u201823<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cStudents put in a lot of time and effort to prepare for tournaments, so it is rewarding to be recognized by the judges!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tournament champions were Pak,<\/span><b> Austin Wu \u201823, Sariya Stowers \u201823, Amarah Friedman \u201825, Lily Morgan \u201825, Alfredo Olaguez \u201824, David Truman \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Jessica Yang \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Second place went to <\/span><b>Jeremy Hubinger \u201823, Spud Webb Tu \u201823, Will Robertson \u201823, Alice Ma \u201824, Jean Pateman \u201825, Ainsley Meyer \u201826, Nicole Emmerson \u201826, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><b> Chantal Pangula \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Placing fourth was the team of <\/span><b>North Carpenter \u201823, Rylan Mueller \u201825, Ryan Connor \u201825, Francesca Brown \u201825, Maita Mungah \u201826, Willow Albano \u201826, Kai Tan \u201826, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><b> Sarah Sylvester \u201825<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to team placement, Robertson, Pak, Mungah, and Morgan received Outstanding Witness Awards, and Stowers, Carpenter, Hubinger, and Wu earned Outstanding Attorney Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Serious about leisure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Robert A. Stebbins \u201961 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received the 2022 book prize from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/leisurestudies.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leisure Studies Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/amazon.com\/Serious-Leisure-Perspective-Synthesis\/dp\/3030480356\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Serious Leisure Perspective: A Synthesis<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThis book is my magnum opus; a synthesis of my extensive exploration of leisure activities that began in 1973,\u201d Dr. Stebbins said. A reviewer wrote: \u201cThe serious leisure perspective is a paramount theory in leisure services\/studies. The book explains the SLP with depth, clarity, precision, accuracy, and with great logical order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Stebbins has published 60 books, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Committed Reader<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2013), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Planning Your Time in Retirement<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2015) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Occupational Devotion<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2022). \u201cMy formation at Mac as a liberal arts scholar fueled my approach to doing exploratory research on amateurs in music, archaeology, baseball, entertainment magic, and several other fields,\u201d he said. \u201cSimilar research occurred subsequently on hobbyists and volunteers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cheers from the Tate Modern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Joanna Inglot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Edith M. Kelso Associate Professor of Art History, wrote one of the definitive books about the 20th century Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz. Her research has been heralded by the Tate Modern as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2022\/11\/art-history-professors-book-illuminates-curators-at-tate-modern-exhibit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">foundation of their exhibit<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Magdalena Abakanowicz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that will run through May 2023. Professor Inglot\u2019s book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Figurative Sculpture of Magdalena Abakanowicz: Bodies, Environments, and Myths<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, was cited as \u201cpivotal\u201d and \u201cgroundbreaking\u201d by the famed curator Mary-Jane Jacob. Dr. Inglot was flown to London as a special guest for the opening.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ion the prize<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chemistry Professor <\/span><b>Dennis Cao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received a $75,000 grant from the Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation through their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dreyfus.org\/2022-henry-dreyfus-teacher-scholar-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teacher-Scholar Award Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This award supports the research and teaching careers of talented young faculty in the chemical sciences who have demonstrated leadership in original scholarly research of outstanding quality, substantially with undergraduates, as well as excellence and dedication in undergraduate education. The grant funds will support the creation of a Little Free Chemistry Library and a research project into new sulfur-containing molecules that are predicted to have interesting optical and electronic properties.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">May it please the court<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This fall, Moot Court students competed at three tournaments and claimed victory against teams from around the country.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the Coastal Classic hosted by the University of California, Santa Barbara, the team of <\/span><b>Julian Applebaum \u201823 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Austin Wu \u201823 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">claimed fourth place. Applebaum individually ranked as the fifth highest scoring competitor, and Wu ranked ninth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the Second City Regional hosted by the University of Chicago, the teams of <\/span><b>Sarah Phillipi \u201825 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Nathan Hemmesch \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Shweta Shankar \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Rachel Christensen \u201825,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> placed as octo-finalists.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the Capital University Regional, the teams of Applebaum and Wu and <\/span><b>Reece Robinson \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Riley Hodin \u201825<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> placed as octo-finalists. <\/span><b>Rebecca Gentry \u201823<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Willow Albano \u201826<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> placed as quarterfinalists. Applebaum individually ranked as the sixth highest scoring competitor.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waste not, win awards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Post-Landfill Action Network ranked Macalester #6 in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.postlandfill.org\/top-10-campuses-2022\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Top 10 Zero Waste Campuses in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We are excited to continue making large strides in our pursuit of zero waste,\u201d said Ellen Gurrola, Sustainability Office coordinator. She credited the achievement to campus-wide efforts towards zero waste goals. Bon Appetit focuses on minimal food waste at Cafe Mac and MacShare allows students to buy affordable food that is purchased in bulk from local farms. Students lead many of Macalester\u2019s zero-waste projects and programs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To pursue zero waste, the Sustainability Office also partners closely with Facilities.
