Below are highlights from February 2023.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A coveted summer plan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester student<\/span><b> Juan Pineda \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> earned a position in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadinstitute.org\/bsrp\/broad-summer-research-program-bsrp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Broad Institute Summer Research Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard. This nine-week program includes a $5,400 stipend, free travel and housing, and the opportunity to present summer research at a national scientific conference. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pineda will work in a lab that focuses on neurodegenerative and neurological diseases. His research interests involve understanding the mechanisms of these diseases and developing possible therapeutics for them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am excited to do research at the prestigious Broad Institute and associated Harvard Hospitals because it will allow me to make valuable connections, meet like-minded people, and be in charge of my own independent project while receiving help from renowned scientists,\u201d Pineda said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honoring 40 years of service to Minnesota courts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mabl.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Minnesota Association of Black Lawyers<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">congratulated and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/api.neonemails.com\/emails\/content\/jgc3ucOw_sZ2n6llWNNNKrdenUrghjlbGNCHYQovXZs=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thanked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the <\/span><b>Honorable Michael J. Davis \u201969<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for 40 years of service as a judicial officer in Minnesota. Judge Davis is the first African American judge appointed to the District of Minnesota. In 2008, he became the first African American chief judge of the district.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJudge Davis is a legacy MABL member, mentor, distinguished jurist, and benefactor to<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Black law students and the larger legal community,\u201d said Dana Mitchell, board president for the association, in a statement. \u201cHe is admired, respected, and celebrated for his intellect, passion, fidelity to the law, and courage.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A high note in Havana<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A string quartet of music students traveled to Havana, Cuba to play alongside Cuban musicians in a collaborative program sponsored by the Cuban American Youth Orchestra. The students received instruction, coaching, and opportunities to perform at the residence of Benjamin Ziff, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Charg\u00e9 d\u2019Affaires of the United States Embassy in Havana<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Students included <\/span><b>Elisa Gehrke \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Roan Floer-Martinez \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on violin, <\/span><b>Olivia Laske \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on viola, and <\/span><b>Ryan Chu \u201924 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on cello. Instructors <\/span><b>James Garlick<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Tom Rosenberg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> accompanied the group.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Their day in (mock) court<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A successful run at the regional tournament in Des Moines means Macalester\u2019s mock trial team will advance to the Opening Round Championship Series tournament hosted at Macalester from March 10-12. <\/span><b>Spud Webb Tu \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Yike Zhou \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> captained the team that placed third to secure an advancing bid, which included <\/span><b>Will Robertson \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Amarah Friedman \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Rylan Mueller \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Jean Pateman \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Ainsley Meyer \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Chantal Pangula \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Amy Paine<\/b> <b>\u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Severin Chmielewski \u201924 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">captained the team that received an honorable mention. The team included <\/span><b>Ryan Connor \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>David Truman \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,&nbsp; <\/span><b>Nicole Emmerson \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Willow Albano \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><b> Kai Tan \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Liv Dalby \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In addition to team success, Friedman and Tan received individual outstanding attorney awards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coexisting with nature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A new research <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41893-023-01063-2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">paper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nature Sustainability<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and co-authored by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stotrachakrabarti.com\"><b>Dr. Stotra Chakrabarti<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a visiting assistant professor of animal behavior, offers new ways to reimagine conservation that incorporate both human needs and the delicate efforts required to preserve biodiversity. In this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2023\/02\/new-research-offers-roadmap-for-wildlife-conservation-and-human-development-to-coexist\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Q&amp;A<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Dr. Chakrabarti discusses his paper, \u201cPrioritizing India\u2019s landscapes for biodiversity, ecosystem services and human well-being,\u201d and explains why India is an ideal place to reshape conservation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">On board for advancing higher education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">President<\/span><b> Suzanne Rivera<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aacu.org\/newsroom\/aacu-announces-directors-and-officers-for-2023\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was elected to the board of directors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, a global membership organization dedicated to advancing the democratic purposes of higher education by promoting equity, innovation, and excellence in liberal education.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The ghosts of global politics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Walter Hatch \u201977 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.press.umich.edu\/11683923\/ghosts_in_the_neighborhood\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">new book<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ghosts in the Neighborhood: Why Japan is Haunted by its Past and Germany is Not, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">available for free on Kindle and online.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A reviewer wrote: \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ghosts in the Neighborhood<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has an intriguing new take on an old question\u2014Why has Germany managed to reconcile with its neighbors while Japan has not? Hatch\u2019s fascinating book explains how international institutions and U.S. policy shaped regional relations, offering important new insights into the postwar global order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Hatch is professor emeritus of government at Colby College. \u201cI became interested in global politics and foreign policy during my time at Macalester,\u201d he said. \u201cFor example, I pushed the college to divest from companies operating in Apartheid South Africa. <\/span><b>April Stoltz \u201977,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was co-leader of this campaign!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Swimming in good grades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams were named Scholar All-America teams by the College Swimming Coaches of America Association. Coached by <\/span><b>Kyllian Griffin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, both teams were recognized as posting top 10 team grade point averages. The women\u2019s team recorded a 3.73 team GPA&nbsp; for the 2022 fall semester to tie for fourth among Division III institutions. The men\u2019s team registered a team GPA of 3.69 during the fall, which ranks ninth.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prize-winning sociology papers<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sociology majors <\/span><b>Sophia Kaufmann \u201923 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Stella Kirszner \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were awarded second and third prizes, respectively, in the 60th Annual Midwest Sociological Society Undergraduate Student Paper Competition. Kaufmann\u2019s paper, \u201cUn-Scene: How Responses to Sexual Violence Reproduce Legal Hegemony in the Bay Area\u2019s Punk and DIY Community,\u201d is based on ethnographic research and in-depth interviews. Kirszner\u2019s paper, \u201cHiding and Hoarding: How the New York City Public School Application Process Reinforces Privilege and Inequality,\u201d uses public school data to examine patterns of admission to middle and high schools.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Looking on the Fulbright side&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2023\/02\/macalester-college-is-a-top-producer-of-fulbright-u-s-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">named Macalester a top producer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of U.S. Student Fulbright awards. Ten Macalester students received 2022-2023 Fulbright scholarships to study, conduct research, and teach abroad. This puts the college in 9th place among baccalaureate institutions and tied for 11th among all schools. As the U.S. government\u2019s flagship international educational exchange program, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fulbrightprogram.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is among the largest and most diverse exchange programs in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are very proud of Macalester\u2019s long streak of being named a top producer of accepted applicants for the Fulbright U.S. Student program.
