Below are highlights from March 2023.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A history prize worth $300K<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Krista Goff \u201904 <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/dandavidprize.org\/winners\/krista-goff\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">won the Dan David Prize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the world\u2019s largest history prize. Goff will receive $300,000 in recognition of her achievements and to support future work. A history professor at the University of Miami, Goff examines asymmetries of power and processes of belonging and exclusion in the Soviet Union. She is the co-editor of the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kritika: Explorations in Russian and Eurasian History<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and co-director of the Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Think Tank, a national program based at Howard University.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOur winners represent a new generation of historians,\u201d said Ariel David, board member of the Prize and the son of its founder, in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dandavidprize.org\/winners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cThey are changing our understanding of the past by asking new questions, targeting under-researched topics and using innovative methods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A triplet of residencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Michael Prior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, English professor and Mellon ACM Faculty Fellow, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">earn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ed a spot in the \u201cPast Wrongs, Future Choices\u201d Spring 2023 residency program at the University of Victoria. The program provides a $9,000 award, a setting for focused work, and interdisciplinary networking opportunities to examine the World War II internment and dispossession of people of Japanese descent in Allied countries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI will use the time and space provided by the residency to continue work on a new poetry collection, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wartime Measures,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which will explore processes of cultural and familial memory in relation to the incarceration of Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians during the Second World War <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an incarceration experienced by my maternal grandparents,\u201d Prof. Prior said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFor me, this new collection is a necessary project of re-witnessing in a time when historical wrongs in North America hauntingly parallel recent politics of persecution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To further support this work, Prof. Prior was selected for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amyclampitt.com\/the-residency-main\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amy Clampitt Residency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which will provide him with a $15,000 stipend and residency in poet Amy Clampitt\u2019s former house in Massachusetts for six months in 2024. Additionally, Prof. Prior was named a 2023 Artist-in-Residence and Master Artist Fellow at Craigardan, a nonprofit arts organization and educational working farm in Elizabethtown, New York<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Prior will receive a $1,000 fellowship and a $500 honorarium to deliver a public talk.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From D.C. to Dublin: Student leader to embark on social justice journey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Hufsa Ahmed \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was selected as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciee.org\/about\/blog\/ciee-celebrates-2023-frederick-douglass-global-fellows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2023 Frederick Douglass Global Fellow<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Ahmed, a political science and economics major, is one of 12 student leaders who will participate in a three-continent global journey to Washington, D.C.; Cape Town, South Africa; and Dublin, Ireland for a comparative study of social justice leadership. During the four-week summer program, fellows will explore the legacies of Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln, John Lewis, Nelson Mandela, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Daniel O\u2019Connell, John Hume, and other giants of social change.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe outstanding students of color selected for this prestigious award were chosen based on their demonstrated commitment to advancing peace in our world by building bridges between people with different viewpoints,\u201d noted the Council on International Educational Exchange in its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciee.org\/about\/blog\/ciee-celebrates-2023-frederick-douglass-global-fellows\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shooting for success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Macalester men\u2019s basketball team wrapped up a strong season, finishing 11-9 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a record that constituted the best MIAC finish, most MIAC wins, and best overall winning percentage since the 2003-04 season. Macalester was the only MIAC team to have three players <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 <\/span><b>Badou Ba \u201925, Coby Gold \u201925 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><b> Caleb Williams \u201924 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 make the all-conference team.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ba<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was named the MIAC\u2019s Defensive Player of the Year. Williams scored his 1,000th point against Saint John\u2019s on Feb. 15 and made the MIAC All-Playoff team. Williams also wa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">named to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/athletics.macalester.edu\/news\/2023\/3\/14\/mens-basketball-mens-basketball-caleb-williams-earns-all-region-honors-from-d3hoops-com.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">D3Hoops.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> All-Region 9 second team and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/athletics.macalester.edu\/news\/2023\/3\/14\/mens-basketball-mens-basketball-caleb-williams-named-to-academic-all-america-first-team.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">selected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the Division III Academic All-America first team for men\u2019s basketball by the College Sports Communicators. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is the first men\u2019s basketball player in Macalester history to earn this honor. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A physics major, Williams holds a 3.91 GPA.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Found in translation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Ahoo Najafian<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor of Islamic Studies, won a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/grants\/research\/scholarly-editions-and-translations-grants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scholarly Editions and Translations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> award from the National Endowment for the Humanities to work on the 12th-century Persian mystical epic, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Divine Tragedy (Mosibat-nameh)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Farid al-Din Attar.
