{"id":20183,"date":"2023-05-11T19:23:54","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T19:23:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/?p=20183"},"modified":"2026-01-18T22:59:56","modified_gmt":"2026-01-18T22:59:56","slug":"nine-macalester-students-and-recent-graduates-receive-2023-fulbright-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/nine-macalester-students-and-recent-graduates-receive-2023-fulbright-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Nine Macalester students and recent graduates receive 2023 Fulbright awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester seniors and recent graduates <\/span><b>Bella Garrioch \u201923, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><b>Eleanor Grinnell \u201923 Owen Sayre \u201923, Emma Iverson \u201922, Rachel Percy \u201922, Carter Rutherford \u201922, Ollie Radovic \u201822, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><b>Willow Fortunoff \u201921 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have received Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards for the 2023-2024 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.&nbsp; In addition, senior <\/span><b>Alexandra Jabbarpour &#8217;23<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received a USTA-Fulbright award.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As Fulbright participants, all recipients will study, conduct research, and teach abroad for the 2023-2024 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program or related Fulbright partnerships abroad. Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected in an open, merit-based competition that considers leadership potential, academic and\/or professional achievement, and record of service. As Fulbright alumni, their careers are enriched by joining a network of thousands of esteemed alumni, many of whom are leaders in their fields. Fulbright alumni include 61 Nobel Prize laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize recipients, and 40 who have served as a head of state or government.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Three students received awards for research:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Willow Fortunoff will conduct research in international relations in Ecuador.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bella Garrioch will conduct research in environmental science in Sweden.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Owen Sayre will conduct research in history and teach English in Austria .<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four students received awards for English Teaching Assistantships:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ollie Radovic will teach English in Turkey.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eleanor Grinnell will teach English in Kyrgyzstan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emma Iverson will teach English in Spain.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rachel Percy will teach English in Taiwan.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carter Rutherford will teach English in Taiwan.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One student received a USTA-Fulbright award for an English Teaching Assistantship:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alexandra Jabbarpour will teach English in Austria.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eca.state.gov\/fulbright\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the U.S. government\u2019s flagship international educational exchange program and is supported by the people of the United States and partner countries around the world. The Fulbright Program is funded through an annual appropriation made by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are so proud that these nine students and recent graduates are continuing the Macalester tradition of sharing their considerable passion and skills with the world through the Fulbright program,\u201d said President Suzanne Rivera.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided more than 400,000 participants from over 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns. The primary source of funding for the Fulbright program is an annual appropriation by the U.S. Congress to the U.S. Department of State\u2019s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
