Below are highlights from Summer 2023.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oxford-bound<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Vanisa (Nita) Senesathith \u201921 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">awarded a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chevening.org\/scholarships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chevening Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which fully funds a one-year master\u2019s degree program in the UK. Senesathith will attend the University of Oxford to study evidence-based social intervention and policy evaluation. A psychology major, she expressed gratitude to her mentors at Macalester. The scholarship will cover flights, accommodation, and course fees.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I am excited to use this degree towards achieving my goal of developing mental health interventions in Laos, my home country,\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Senesathith<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A lion&#8217;s share of honors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Biology Professor Stotra Chakrabarti<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the Career Diversity Award from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalbehaviorsociety.org\/web\/index.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animal Behavior Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the organization\u2019s conference in Portland, Oregon, and the Early Career Travel Award from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mammalsociety.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Society of Mammalogists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the International Mammalogical Congress in Anchorage, Alaska. \u201cThese awards helped me participate and present at these conferences,\u201d Dr. Chakrabarti said. \u201cI am grateful for the recognition.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He presented his long-term behavioral research on wild lions in India and East Africa, \u201cThrough this research, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">we have been able to understand the fundamental causes and consequences of group living in one of the most charismatic carnivores of our time,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A clarinet crescendo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester clarinet instructor and Wind Symphony director <\/span><b>Shelley Hanson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was the featured soloist at the Minneapolis Pops Orchestra\u2019s July 16 concert. The professional orchestra presents 10 concerts each summer at the Lake Harriet Bandshell for approximately 3,000 audience members. Hanson has served as the orchestra\u2019s principal clarinetist for over 25 years.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pride in research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Eliza King \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> presented her research on lion predation ecology from Tsavo, Kenya at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neonscience.org\/get-involved\/events\/13th-international-mammalogical-congress-imc-13\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International Mammalogical Congress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Anchorage, Alaska. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This research, conducted with Professor Stotra Chakrabarti, found that lions in Tsavo prefer hirola and Grevy\u2019s zebras, both rare and endangered herbivores. According to King, this work offers foundational information on safeguarding these species during periods of high lion predation. With the conference hosting the world\u2019s top research on mammals, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chakrabarti noted: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Presenting undergraduate research at such a conference is a reflection of Mac students\u2019 academic excellence.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking about her experience, King said, \u201cThere were opportunities to meet with a mentor in the field, have meals with established mammalogists, and join workshops. There were so many amazing talks from scientists of all backgrounds, and I could stop and have a conversation with anyone whose work interested me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behind the curtain<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theater and Dance Professor <\/span><b>kt shorb <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was awarded the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssrc.org\/programs\/arts-research-with-communities-of-color-program-arcc\/2023-ssrc-arts-research-with-communities-of-color-fellowship-request-for-proposals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social Science Research Council\u2019s Arts Research with Communities of Color Fellowship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for 2023-24. As the embedded researcher at Theater Mu in St. Paul, Dr. shorb will collaborate with creative and administrative staff to examine the theater\u2019s archive, interview important community members, and participate in and observe events, rehearsals, and performances. They will look at how Theater Mu engages with Asian American aesthetics, rehearsal room practices, and creative placemaking.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have long admired the work of Theater Mu and feel that Twin Cities theater is under-researched, nationally,\u201dDr. shorb said. \u201cI hope to begin a long relationship with Mu and explore the many ways theater by people of color here has been innovative and important to the landscape of U.S. theater.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fluent in excellence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of more than 5,000 applicants, Macalester student <b>Nurain Jiwani \u201926<\/b> and recent graduate <b>Shaherazade Khan \u201923 <\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">were selected for the U.S. Department of State\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.clscholarship.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Critical Language Scholarship Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The program, part of a U.S. government effort to boost the study of critical foreign languages, equips scholars with language and cultural skills to support U.S. economic competitiveness and national security. Participants concentrate on one of 14 critical languages for 8-10 weeks. Jiwani studied Persian, and Khan studied Urdu. The program offers intensive language instruction and cultural enrichment, partnering with universities and nonprofits around the globe to immerse U.S. students in locations where the target language is spoken.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dam good research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Avery Munster \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalbehaviorsociety.org\/web\/awards-turner.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animal Behavior Society Turner Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to present her capstone research on wolf-beaver predation dynamics at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.animalbehaviorsociety.org\/2023\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Animal Behavior Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> conference in Portland.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was very excited to present my research at this international venue and hone my science communication skills, as well as connect with established professionals in the field of animal behavior and welfare research,\u201d Munster said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Conducted in collaboration with Professor Stotra Chakrabarti, her research focused on the factors influencing beaver terrestrial activity in Voyageurs National Park. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Beavers shape the trajectory of ecosystems through their dam building activities, so understanding what affects this activity is crucial,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prof. Chakrabarti noted that this conference is the premier animal behavior conference, and receiving an award to present undergraduate research is a significant accomplishment. \u201cI am super proud of Avery,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Labor of love rewarded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Lesley Lavery<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, professor and chair of political science, and Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Emma Curchin \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, were co-authors of the paper, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cReckoning with Racism in U.S. Schools: Teachers Unions\u2019 Response to Calls for Change,\u201d which won the 2023 Dorothy Day Award for the best paper on labor politics presented at the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apsanet.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Political Science Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Annual Meeting. The nomination committee called the work theoretically rich, data intensive, and driven by a compelling question.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A dramatic development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Cristina Luz\u00e1rraga<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a visiting faculty member in Theater and Dance, joined the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwcenter.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Playwrights&#8217; Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> cohort of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pwcenter.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Core Writers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Consisting of committed professional playwrights who demonstrate a sustained body of work and artistic merit, Core Writers receive three years of support as they develop new works for the stage. Prof. Luz\u00e1rraga is known for her dark comedies, often featuring unruly women and an exploration of the grotesque and uncanny.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBeing a Core Writer is a vote of confidence to keep on keeping on in an art form and business with a high bar of entry,\u201d said Prof. Luz\u00e1rraga. She also noted the importance of deepening her relationship with the Center: \u201cI\u2019m delighted to continue developing new work at the Playwrights\u2019 Center, which has become an invaluable resource for me since I moved to the Twin Cities four years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dancing to success<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Theater and Dance Visiting Faculty Member <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcknightdancechoreo.org\/fellows\/sam-aros-mitchell\"><b>Sam Aros-Mitchell<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and Guest Choreographer<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcknightdancechoreo.org\/fellows\/yuki-tokuda\"><b>Yuki Tokuda<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received 2023 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcknightdancechoreo.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">McKnight Fellowships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This award recognizes accomplished choreographers and dancers who are beyond early practice and reside in Minnesota. As dancer fellows, Aros-Mitchell and Tokuda will each receive a $25,000 award, providing them with the flexibility to dedicate time for study, reflection, experimentation, exploration, seizing opportunities, or embarking on new projects.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tapping into a world of knowledge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Andrew Latham<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, professor of international relations and political theory, was named a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Council on Foreign Relations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> higher education ambassador. The Council on Foreign Relations is an independent, nonpartisan think tank that promotes understanding of international relations and foreign policy. It was founded in 1921 and is now the premier foreign policy think tank in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From trash to treasures<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester won the waste diversion category of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/campusracetozerowaste.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Campus Race to Zero Waste<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> case study competition. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each year, Macalester-themed items such as mugs and t-shirts are donated to the Macalester Free Swap, but many students don\u2019t take them, often causing these items to go to waste. The Sustainability Office and Athletics Department organized a reuse pop-up event at a basketball game, offering these items to attendees, particularly alumni and families who showed great enthusiasm due to their connection to Macalester. <\/span><b>Ellen Gurrola<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Sustainability Office coordinator, noted that these individuals were more inclined to embrace Macalester-branded items.
