Below are highlights from December 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Beyond the birds and the bees<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vice President of Student Affairs <\/span><b>Dr. Kathryn Kay Coquemont<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was one of six panelists at the U.S. Department of Education\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/12\/05\/readout-of-vice-president-kamala-harriss-participation-at-the-department-of-educations-convening-on-access-to-contraception-for-college-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">convening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on college students\u2019 access to contraception, led by Vice President Kamala Harris and other government officials. They joined representatives from 68 colleges and universities in 32 states to discuss ongoing efforts to protect this access.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a featured speaker, Dr. Coquemont shared Macalester\u2019s innovative approach, led by medical director <\/span><b>Dr. Steph Walters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, that focuses on sexual and reproductive care and efforts to destigmatize reproductive health through anonymous access to contraceptives and safe-sex kits. Vice President Harris commended Macalester\u2019s approach as \u201ca great model\u201d for others to consider.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are proud that our peers and the American College Health Association consider us a leader in strategies and support to promote reproductive health for college students,\u201d said Dr. Coquemont.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tenure extended<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Seven professors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/2023\/12\/seven-macalester-professors-awarded-tenure\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">were awarded tenure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><b>Mary Heskel<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Biology; <\/span><b>Michael Prior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, English; <\/span><b>William Mitchell<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science; <\/span><b>Morgan Sleeper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Linguistics; <\/span><b>Serdar Yal\u00e7\u0131n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Art and Art History; <\/span><b>Leslie Myint<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science; and<\/span><b> Robin Shields-Cutler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Biology. Prof. Heskel studies plants and how they respond to the effects of climate change in Arctic, forest, and urban ecosystems. Prof. Prior is a poet with an expertise in Asian North American literature. Prof. Mitchell is a mathematician with expertise in fluid mechanics. Prof. Sleeper is an expert in musicolinguistics, Patagonian Welsh, and language in Japanese popular media. Prof. Yal\u00e7\u0131n is an expert in the art and archeology of ancient Western Asia with a focus on art and identity and artistic interconnections in the ancient world. Prof. Myint is a biostatistician who focuses on the analysis of biological data and causal inference, or policy evaluation. Prof. Shields-Cutler is a microbiologist who uses laboratory and high performance computing techniques to understand how microbes interact with humans and other animals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Diving into Minneapolis\u2019s fiery past&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Myrl Beam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">associate professor of women\u2019s, gender, and sexuality studies, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/placesjournal.org\/news\/recipient-of-the-2023-arcus-places-prize-myrl-beam\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2023 Arcus Places Prize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which supports public scholarship on the relationship between gender, sexuality, and the built environment. His<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> project, \u201cThe Long Fire at Lake and Minnehaha,\u201d explores the history <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of the intersection surrounding the Minneapolis Police Department\u2019s third precinct: Lake Street and Minnehaha, which burned during the 2020 uprising after George Floyd\u2019s murder.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lake and Minnehaha grounds a decades-long history of struggle over Indigenous land, public space, and violent policing, punctuated by eruptions of racist and transphobic violence and marred by the quotidian dehumanization of houseless people, many of whom are Native,\u201d Prof. Beam said. Students in his spring course, Telling Trans Stories: Oral History as Method and Practice, will join the research project with Dr. Beam and collaborators, engaging in archival research, conducting oral histories, and working on the digital exhibit. The award will also fund student research assistants contributing to the project.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A flood of ideas in the Himalayas <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The School for International Training named Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Ronan Wallace \u201922<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as the newest Alice Rowan Swanson Fellow. Wallace studied abroad in SIT\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sit.edu\/country\/np\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program in spring 2022. For his fellowship project, he plans to return to Nepal to document flooding impacts through 3D modeling and ethnographic interviewing in two villages threatened by Himalayan flooding, which is growing more acute each year due to the climate crisis. A lack of documentation makes it difficult for the communities to get the assistance they need. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fellowships are awarded twice annually for recipients to return to their program country and pursue projects benefiting human rights in that region.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am beyond ecstatic to reconnect with the communities and relationships that contributed immensely to my initial experience in Nepal,\u201d Wallace said. \u201cI am excited to contribute tangible value by combining engineering, ethnography, and empathy to understand mountainous climate impacts from underrepresented perspectives.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Witness the mock trial success&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s mock trial team participated in two invitationals \u2014 one in Madison, Wisconsin and the other in Iowa City, Iowa. In Madison, all three stacked teams enjoyed competing together, and <\/span><b>Amarah Friedman \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received an outstanding attorney award. In Iowa City, one team competed (1018), securing second place with a 6-1-1 record. Friedman, <\/span><b>Rylan Mueller \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Maita Mungah \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> each earned outstanding witness awards.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Bookmarked for an award&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Walter Greason<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, DeWitt Wallace Professor of History, contributed to a book that won the Phillis Wheatley Book Award for nonfiction from Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage.
