Below are highlights from March 2024.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Heartfelt innovation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A team of four Macalester students, part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/innovation-scholars.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Innovation Scholars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> program, presented project recommendations to leaders in the biomedical industry in Minneapolis. Focused on cardiovascular research and healthcare models, they worked to help the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/mplsheart.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> increase enrollment in clinical trials. Team members included <\/span><b>Adrian Aguilar \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Yoandri Hernandez \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><b> Sidnie Layesa \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Janine Preko \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with mentoring from campus advisors Liz Jansen, Felix Friedt, Peter Ferderer, Sasmita Tripathy, and Elena Tonc. The team was led by St. Catherine University graduate student Maggie Bianchi.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Innovation Scholars<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is a nationally recognized experiential learning program that engages teams of liberal arts students in the complex processes of translational medicine, taking an idea \u201cfrom the bench to the bedside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bookish fun<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Penelope Geng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate professor of English, took part in an interactive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/premodern\/news-events\/events\/book-panel-colonization-consent-and-community\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">book panel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> event organized by the Center for Predmodern Studies at the University of Minnesota. Prof. Geng and two other authors explored the surprising overlaps between their books around themes of community, consent, and colonization in early modern England and early America. Each of these three studies considers how ordinary individuals hold powerful influence in shaping economic, social, and legal processes and norms.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Geng also contributed a chapter, titled \u201cDressing to Transgress: Aesthetic Matching, Historical Costumers of Color, and the Restorying of Institutional Spaces,\u201d in the new publication \u201cSituating Shakespeare Pedagogy in US Higher Education: Social Justice and Institutional Contexts.\u201d The chapter contains an extended reflection on a longstanding and popular class in the English department: Major British Authors.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A leader among leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Laurie Adamson<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, executive director of the Center for Student Leadership &amp; Engagement, received the 2024 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Leadership in Student Affairs program at the University of St. Thomas.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to receive this award,\u201d Adamson said. \u201cIt motivates me to continue striving to serve in students\u2019 educational experiences at Mac in impactful ways, and inspires me to further explore innovative approaches and initiatives that can positively impact the student community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her nominator, Dr. Kathryn Kay Coquemont, vice president for Student Affairs, praised Adamson\u2019s commitment to leadership, social justice, and theory-to-practice in her work as a student affairs educator.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne of the things that the student body most appreciates about Laurie is how she fosters an environment where all students feel like they belong, have support, are valued, and can thrive,\u201d Dr. Coquemont said. \u201cBecause of this, students from all backgrounds gravitate to her, seeking her advice and support as they navigate college.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gray Lady fellows<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Macalester graduates were named to The New York Times <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/careers\/newsroom\/newsroom-fellowship\/2024-25-fellows\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2024-25 fellowship class<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Selected from thousands of applicants, these early-career journalists will cover some of the world\u2019s biggest stories as part of an industry-leading program. They will begin in June in the New York, San Francisco, and Washington offices.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/person\/aileen-clarke\/\"><b>Aileen Clarke \u201915<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will focus on opinion graphics. Her most recent position was the interactive graphics intern at The Seattle Times. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytco.com\/person\/june-kim\/\"><b>June Kim<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will focus on data and graphics reporting. Most recently, she was a fellow at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MIT Technology Review.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Among the Twin Cities\u2019 top women in business<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>President Suzanne Rivera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/twincities\/news\/2024\/03\/19\/2024-women-in-business-honorees-day-2.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">named<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to this year\u2019s list of Women in Business honorees by the Minneapolis\/Saint Paul Business Journal. These awards honor the Twin Cities\u2019 most influential women, including industry-leading executives, entrepreneurs, and business owners.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recognized prose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Walter Greason<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, DeWitt Wallace Professor of History, contributed to a book, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Black Reparations Project: A Handbook for Racial Justice, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/socialequity.duke.edu\/news\/the-black-reparations-project-selected-as-a-finalist-in-the-association-of-american-publishers-aaup-prose-award-in-economics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">selected as a finalist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the Association of American Publishers PROSE Award in Economics. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Greason\u2019s chapter, \u201cUnequal Housing and the Case for Reparations,\u201d examines ho<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">w suburbanization transformed American landscape design.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIts consumer culture hollowed out any concept of shared civic community,\u201d Prof. Greason said. \u201cThe fee-laden debt and the investment in substandard social structures that resulted effectively eradicated the small amounts of wealth that Black families had gathered during the Jim Crow years.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future public policy leaders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Macalester students, <\/span><b>Amanda Nogueira Moreira de Souza \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Alan Schulz Diaz \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, were accepted into <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppiaprogram.org\/junior-summer-institute\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Public Policy &amp; International Affairs Program Junior Summer Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Princeton School of Public and International Affairs.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This free six-week rigorous summer program at one of six host campuses prepares students for advanced schooling and careers in public service in both domestic and global affairs. Fellows receive a stipend to assist with summer travel, food, and other expenses. This year, out of an applicant pool of more than 1300 students, 149 fellows were selected from 33 states, 94 universities, and 21 countries.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scoring another recognition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Caleb Williams \u201924,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a guard on the men\u2019s basketball team, was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.d3hoops.com\/awards\/all-region\/2023-24\/region-9-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">named<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to the D3Hoops.com All-Region 9 first team. This is the third All-Region honor for Williams, who has led the Scots in scoring in each of his three full seasons at Macalester.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBeing a collegiate student-athlete has forced me to develop valuable time management skills, the ability to perform under pressure, and has taught me how to work together with a team,\u201d Williams <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/athletics.macalester.edu\/sports\/mens-basketball\/roster\/caleb-williams\/12627\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">wrote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Amplifying voices in Lesotho<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Andrew Kaufteil \u201901<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will work on a project in Lesotho as part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fulbrightspecialist.worldlearning.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fulbright Specialist Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, in which U.S. faculty and professionals <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">engage in two- to six-week, project-based exchanges at host institutions across the globe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI will be helping country leaders to develop their first-ever proactive and comprehensive communications strategy,\u201d Kaufteil said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am excited to apply my skills in marketing and communications to furthering the goals of this fascinating and growing nation.
