Below are highlights from April 2024.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Speaking up for libraries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Angi Faiks<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, library director, was nominated and elected to the Executive Committee of the Center For Research Libraries Board of Directors.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am thrilled to be representing Macalester and colleges like ours on the board,\u201d she said. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crl.edu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Center for Research Libraries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an international consortium of university, college, and independent research libraries that focuses on preserving and making available to scholars rare and uncommon primary source materials from all world regions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt is crucial that colleges like ours have representation and voice on the future of library collections at a local, national and global level and this opportunity makes way for that,\u201d Faiks said. \u201cOur library staff are dedicated to ensuring access to quality collections for research and knowledge making, both within and well beyond the walls of our library.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"212\" height=\"211\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/12-Angi-Faiks.jpeg\" alt=\"Angi Faiks\" class=\"wp-image-24265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/12-Angi-Faiks.jpeg 212w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/12-Angi-Faiks-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 212px) 100vw, 212px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Honors project on the runway<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With an individually designed major in fashion and costume design, <\/span><b>Lily Turner \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> showcased her honors project, \u201cFrom Field View,\u201d on campus and at Minnesota Fashion Week.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs a creative follow-up to my academic honors research into sustainability in the fashion industry and particularly local fiber growing capabilities for ethical textile production, I created a six-look entirely biodegradable capsule collection,\u201d Turner said. \u201cThe garments were created out of a soil-to-soil framework, meaning they could be buried in the ground at the end of their lifecycle and serve as nutrients rather than pollution.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bringing the runway to life was a collaborative effort across theater and dance, studio art and the sustainability office.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis project was over a year in the making and was presented alongside professional designers at one of the largest arts events in Minnesota,\u201d Turner said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learn it by ear<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Drawing on her expertise in music theory and ear training, music professor <\/span><b>Dr. Victoria Malawey <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published an open educational resource: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pressbooks.macalester.digital\/multimodalmusicianship\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Multimodal Musicianship<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Offering text, musical and audio examples, video content, application activities, and links to supplemental content, this resource is designed for students to learn and reinforce their knowledge according to their learning styles and needs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhat excites me most is making this learning content I have developed widely available to anyone who has an internet connection, in the spirit of open access,\u201d Prof. Malawey said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Macalester digital liberal arts team, including staff from the library and Information Technology Services supported the creation and the hosting of this project. Prof. Malawey was a digital liberal arts faculty fellow from 2022-2023, an opportunity funded by the Making Meaning grant from the Mellon Foundation. Dr. Malawey also received a Macalester College Library Open Educational Resources stipend.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/2-Victoria-Malawey-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Victoria Malawey\" class=\"wp-image-24269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/2-Victoria-Malawey-200x300.jpg 200w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/2-Victoria-Malawey.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A deep dive into research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anthropology major<\/span><b> L\u00eda Sanchez Valles \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was accepted to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stonecenter.unc.edu\/moore-undergraduate-research-apprentice-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this summer. This prestigious research fellowship aims to increase diversity and inclusion in higher education, especially in regards to racial and ethnic identity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During this paid summer fellowship, students work with faculty mentors in an original research project, attend writing workshops, receive training in research communication skills, and participate in other professional development activities to prepare them for success in graduate school and academic careers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A victory for the debate books<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s policy debate team advanced to the highest level of competition: the elimination rounds of the National Debate Tournament and was named the 20th team in the nation. Students <\/span><b>Will Kochel \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Sam Price \u201925 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">represented the college on the national stage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cSam and Will have worked so hard for this, giving practice speeches and researching the year-long nuclear weapons topic we were assigned in May from every angle we could find,\u201d said <\/span><b>Beau Larsen<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, director of forensics.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Larsen expressed gratitude to Political Science Professor Andrew Latham for assisting with topic research; forensics coach Casey Moerer; and Kwudjwa Osei, who helped the team with arguments that deploy critical theory to analyze nuclear weapons. Macalester last advanced to elimination rounds in 1996.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis win is also a huge recruitment tool for the thousands of high school debaters who now know the name Macalester,\u201d Larsen said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/4-Macalester-Debate-Nationals-4-300x257.jpg\" alt=\"Will Kochel \u201927 and Sam Price \u201925\" class=\"wp-image-24273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/4-Macalester-Debate-Nationals-4-300x257.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/4-Macalester-Debate-Nationals-4.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Echoes of the past<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Michael Prior, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">English professor and Mellon ACM Faculty Fellow, was awarded a $20,000 (Canadian) grant from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jclegaciesfund.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japanese Canadian Legacies Community Fund<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to co-edit a new anthology of Japanese Canadian Creative Writing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis will be the first multi-generational, multi-genre anthology of this scope that focuses on the survivors and descendants of the World War II Japanese Canadian prison camps,\u201d Prof. Prior said. \u201cIt\u2019s an important opportunity to highlight a wide array of perspectives and voices and to trace the lineages and legacies of the wartime dispossession and displacement. I think the project is incredibly relevant: The racist and exclusionary systems and forces that led to the incarceration of people of Japanese descent in Canada and America during the War persist in contemporary North America, as evidenced by the rise in anti-Asian hate during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/10-Michael-Prior-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Michael Prior\" class=\"wp-image-24275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/10-Michael-Prior-273x300.jpg 273w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/10-Michael-Prior.jpg 545w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A scholarly slam dunk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Caleb Williams \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a guard on the men\u2019s basketball team, was named an Academic All-American for the second year in a row by the College Sports Communicators.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCongratulations to Caleb on this special honor,\u201d Macalester head coach <\/span><b>Abe Woldeslassie \u201908<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/athletics.macalester.edu\/news\/2024\/4\/17\/mens-basketball-mens-basketball-caleb-williams-repeats-as-academic-all-american.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cIt\u2019s a credit to how hard he has worked in the classroom. He has represented Macalester so well and is the epitome of a successful student-athlete.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A premier place to study ancient art<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Serdar Yalcin<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor in art and art history, received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.getty.edu\/projects\/villa-scholars-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Getty Residential Scholar Grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to support research at the Getty Villa in Los Angeles.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI am very excited to work at the Getty Villa, which has one of the most comprehensive ancient art collections in North America,\u201d he said. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I will investigate the formation of early Greek temples in the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, and the impact of ancient Western Asian traditions in this process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/6-Serdar-Yalcin-in-the-field-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Serdar Yalcin at an archaeological dig, examining an ancient pot\" class=\"wp-image-24279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/6-Serdar-Yalcin-in-the-field-230x300.jpg 230w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/6-Serdar-Yalcin-in-the-field.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summer research funded, safety goggles ready<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Dennis Cao<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate professor in chemistry and student researcher <\/span><b>Eliza Anderson-Lefort \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> earned a grant from the American Chemical Society Division of Organic Chemistry Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program. This grant supports undergraduate research in summer 2024 and provides Anderson-Lefort with valuable experience working in Professor Cao\u2019s lab on his research titled, \u201cRapid Construction of Electron-Deficient Aromatics by Cycloadditions of 3-Arylmaleimide with Maleimides.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A game-changing book<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Georgia Cloepfil \u201914<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> wrote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/735538\/the-striker-and-the-clock-by-georgia-cloepfil\/9780593714881\/?ref=PRHDA1B5A12013D\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Striker and the Clock<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> set to release from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Penguin Riverhead and Bloomsbury (UK) in July 2024. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Written in 90 short passages \u2014 reflecting the 90 inexorably passing minutes of a soccer match \u2014 the book is a love letter to a maddening sport and a reflection on the way it has shaped a life.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI played soccer at Mac and that experience was the launching pad for my professional career, which is the foundation of the memoir,\u201d said Cloepfil, who has played in South Korea, Australia, Lithuania and other count<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ries. \u201cIt is a huge privilege to hear from both strangers and loved ones about how they have connected to what I wrote.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cloepfil will do a reading on July 18 at Next Chapter Books in St. Paul.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"191\" <\/span><b>Aisling Quigley, Ginny Moran \u201990, Brooke Schmolke <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and<\/span><b> Louann Terveer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014 wrote a book chapter titled \u201cSustaining the Digital Liberal Arts: Institutional Challenges in Looking Beyond Grant Funding,\u201d in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alastore.ala.org\/digital-humanities-library-second-edition-eeditions-pdf-e-book\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Digital Humanities in the Library, Second Edition<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe wrote this chapter because we have shared experiences working on grant-funded initiatives in higher education settings and wanted to address the pressing concern of sustaining grant activities, and particularly digital initiatives at Macalester, after the period of grant-funding has ended,\u201d the team said. \u201cWe share a collective desire to shift digital humanities work from being grant-funded, temporary, and project-based to institutionally integrated, supported, and sustainable through initiatives that move beyond individually cultivated relationships.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"442\" graduate<\/span><b> Matt Landers \u201906<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gmfus.org\/marshall-memorial-fellowship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Marshall Memorial Fellowship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the German Marshall Fund.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI first learned about the German Marshall Fund and this fellowship while at Mac, about 18 years ago,\u201d he said. \u201cI saw it at the time as a stretch goal for professional achievement, and to actually receive this highly competitive fellowship is a longstanding dream come true.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Landers participated in six months of online learning and then spent three weeks in Europe (Munich, Sofia, Madrid, and Brussels) as part of a five-person cohort of Americans learning about civil society, transatlantic relations, and democracy in action. Meetings included the Munich Security Forum, Bavarian high schoolers, the Bulgarian Minister of Justice, LGBTQ activists, Madrid city councilmembers, and refugee journalists.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt brought me back to the Macalester foundations of internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society within an interconnected world,\u201d Landers said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"294\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/9-Matt-Landers-294x300.jpg\" alt=\"Matt Landers\" class=\"wp-image-24285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/9-Matt-Landers-294x300.jpg 294w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/04\/9-Matt-Landers.jpg 588w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 294px) 100vw, 294px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shakespeare as a teaching tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Penelope Geng<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, associate professor of English, co-facilitated a pedagogy workshop for the Guthrie Theatre\u2019s \u201cA Shakespeare Symposium.\u201d The workshop included an interactive and community-building set of activities that enabled the participants (K-12 teachers, university professors, graduate students, and members of the public) to explore teaching strategies and challenges related to Shakespearean drama.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The symposium explored the importance of Shakespeare\u2019s history plays in their own time (of the 1590s) and in the present moment. Gilbonio \u201920<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was awarded a fellowship from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsfgrfp.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Dippenaar studies how muscle memory is developed using birdsong as a model.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThroughout their adolescence, songbirds learn to sing through a process of trial-and-error as they attempt to copy their parent\u2019s song,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen they are adults, they can perform their song with amazing accuracy.
