Below are highlights from May 2024.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pride and progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Julian Applebaum \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, currently in England for graduate school, is a finalist for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thequeerstudentawards.co.uk\/shortlist\/rolemodel-student\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UK\u2019s Queer Student Role Model Of The Year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for his community work at the University of Oxford. Applebaum advocated for policy changes for trans inclusion, including improvements to the university\u2019s registration system to better accommodate trans student name changes and establishing a fund for gender-affirming support. The Queer Student Awards celebrate talented young LGBTQ+ people who are proudly leading in their lives and the communities around them.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo be recognized as a role model is especially meaningful to me because to be a role model is more than just doing good work, it also means uplifting others by example and helping them see the strength and beauty within themselves,\u201d Applebaum said. \u201cIf I can help others realize their own potential, that is one of the best successes I can think of.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/1-Julian-Applebaum-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"Julian Applebaum '23\" class=\"wp-image-25659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/1-Julian-Applebaum-228x300.jpg 228w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/1-Julian-Applebaum.jpg 304w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Award-winning documentary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Razik Saifullah \u201924 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">won Best Documentary Film for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You Don\u2019t Feel Safe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (2023) at the Twin Cities Intercollegiate Film Festival. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You Don\u2019t Feel Safe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explores how the formation of a White Student Union in 1991 wreaked havoc across two college campuses in Minnesota. His red carpet interview is available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qXPV-_6c8Fs\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best value nod for Macalester<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester was listed among Study Abroad Aide\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studyabroadaide.com\/best-value-institutions-liberal-arts-colleges-in-the-united-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Best Value Liberal Arts Colleges in the United States for International Students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This ranking highlight\u2019s Macalester\u2019s commitment to providing a high-quality education at an accessible cost.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sharing the computing wealth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. <\/b><b>Getiria Onsongo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">associate professor in mathematics, statistics and computer science, received a subaward from the National Science Foundation via the University of Northern Iowa. This grant will bring together researchers from small colleges and universities in the Midwest to determine the feasibility and requirements of a shared high performance computing cluster. Such a cluster will level the playing field with major R1 institutions by allowing small and primarily undergraduate colleges and universities to share resources that they would otherwise be unable to fund by themselves. The proposal title is \u201cCIRA: High-performance computing solutions for small Midwest institutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">88 and still making waves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester alum<\/span><b> Bill Kansas \u201958 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received what he called \u201cthe honor of a lifetime\u201d when he was inducted into the Minnesota Senior Sports Hall of Fame on May 17 for his achievements in swimming. Kansas has broken 30 Minnesota state records and currently holds 20 of them. He has achieved 59 individual national top ten times and four world top ten times, along with 49 relay national top ten times and 18 world top ten times. He holds All-American status in both individual and relay events and has been named \u201cBest in Nation\u201d ten times. At age 88, Kansas is still competing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/3-Bill-Kansas-medals-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Bill Kansas '58\" class=\"wp-image-25661\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/3-Bill-Kansas-medals-300x300.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/3-Bill-Kansas-medals-150x150.jpg 150w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/3-Bill-Kansas-medals.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student-led ideas to solve real world problems<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Macalester students were selected as 2024-25 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnprivatecolleges.org\/giving\/program-scholarships\/phillips-scholars-program\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phillips Scholars<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to create and test innovative ideas that address community problems. Scholars receive leadership development opportunities and more than $9,000 in scholarship support. Ten students from 15 Minnesota private colleges are selected each year. Macalester\u2019s recipients discussed their goals:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Ridwan Osman \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: \u201cI aim to continue growing the \u2018Somali Youth Coding Bootcamp,\u2019 expanding the curriculum and reaching more students. I want to empower these young people with coding skills and show them the transformative possibilities of a STEM education.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Shirly Keyli (Yamal\u00ed) Rodas Figueroa \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: \u201cThe primary objective of this program is to create a platform for Twin Cities youth, particularly those aged 16-24, to engage in reproductive justice advocacy. The initiative focuses on mobilizing and organizing communities for issues such as abortion access, comprehensive sex education, and other reproductive health concerns.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unlocking the future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Phi Beta Kappa Society <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbk.org\/key-into-public-service-scholars-2024\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that <\/span><b>Amanda Nogueira Moreira de Souza \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will represent Macalester as a Key into Public Service Scholar for 2024. She was one of 20 students selected from more than 700 applicants and will receive a $5,000 undergraduate scholarship and participate in a conference in Washington, D.C. in June. This conference provides scholars with training, mentoring, and reflection on pathways into local, state, and federal government public service.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waste not, win a lot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/campusracetozerowaste.org\/scoreboard\/current-results\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">won first place in the Small Campus Waste Diversion Category<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the Campus Race for Zero Waste.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis is exciting because it means Macalester has diverted a larger percentage of waste from incinerators or landfills compared to other institutions in the competition,\u201d said Sustainability Director Megan Butler. \u201cThis is a great benchmark of our achievements as Macalester works towards our zero waste goals of diverting 90% of the waste produced on campus from a landfill or incinerator.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In another stride toward sustainability, Macalester scored 80.87 on its latest Sustainability Report with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education. This self-reporting framework allows colleges and universities to measure and track their sustainability performance. The report, submitted every three years, saw Macalester improve by nearly five points since the last submission.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/13-Zero-waste-badge-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Campus Waste to Zero Waste 2024 Winner in the Small Campus Division for Diversion badge\" class=\"wp-image-25667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/13-Zero-waste-badge-300x300.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/13-Zero-waste-badge-150x150.jpg 150w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/13-Zero-waste-badge.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Building peace in the Balkans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The School for International Training <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sit.edu\/pressrelease\/new-alice-rowan-swanson-fellow-brings-human-rights-education-to-post-war-bosnia-and-herzegovina\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">named<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Ana Gvozdic \u201921 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as the newest Alice Rowan Swanson Fellow. Gvozdic will implement her project in Mostar, a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina where she was born and lived for 15 years. The project aims to enhance the U\u010diMo Foundation\u2019s Mostar Summer Youth Program by emphasizing human rights education for both the participants and volunteers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Alice Rowan Swanson Fellowship is such a meaningful opportunity for me to reconnect with a unique youth education program in my hometown of Mostar \u2014 a program that stands apart by its inclusive nature in a post-war ethnically-divided context,\u201d Gvozdic said. \u201cBy teaching a course on human rights advocacy and supporting an initiative that brings young people together in the aftermath of human rights violations, I hope to support and strengthen local capacities for sustainable peacebuilding and reconciliation.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Raising the bar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Molly Bowen \u201907<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> , a partner at Cohen Milstein, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.com\/nationallawjournal\/2024\/05\/09\/the-national-law-journal-announces-2024-elite-trial-lawyers-awards-finalists\/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR2ahlD7tyYxxNqrc_iwe-T8FKLMu8XMcuzFDLmF_3FltuHhSIKomUqv1hk_aem_AY8fwPf3GEaAMq9b4n8T8NkybsnGqJFs-yhuQ7bLT-NEg-LkHnfpLz_8_Yaf4FuYiTZjQGzwjM4raXWN6cWecXXg&amp;slreturn=20240427170118\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was recognized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as one of the National Law Journal\u2019s 2024 Elite Women of the Plaintiffs Bar. The awards recognize outstanding plaintiffs work in a high-stakes bench or jury trial or in a major settlement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new take on counterterrorism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dipakshi Sarma \u201924<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was awarded honorable mention for the 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lambprize.org\/about-the-prize\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bert &amp;<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phyllis Lamb Prize in Political Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Sarma, an international studies and political science double major, was recognized by the World Social Science Association for her paper, \u201cThe Problems of Ineffective De-radicalization: Innovating Southeast Asian Counterterrorism Mechanisms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">During the conference\u2019s award ceremony Dr. Berton Lamb, principal of the Lamb Prize, said, \u201cWe are excited to recognize Ms. Sarma\u2019s work because undergraduate papers like hers are cornerstones for building the future of political science.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This award honors undergraduate students for excellence in writing and innovation in the political science field. The selection committee applauded Sarma for tackling the counterterrorism issue and identifying innovative solutions through a comparative analysis.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poetic triumph<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Michael Prior<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, English professor and Mellon ACM Faculty Fellow, was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">presented with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ca.emb-japan.go.jp\/itpr_en\/C-J_Literary_Awards_2020-2022.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Canada-Japan Literary Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a prize of $10,000 Canadian, for his book of poems, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Burning-Province-Michael-Prior\/dp\/0771072341\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Burning Province<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The prize recognizes literary excellence by Canadian writers, including those who \u201cwrite a work on Japan, on Japanese themes or on themes that promote mutual understanding between Japan and Canada.\u201d Inspired by the wildfires that scorched British Columbia in 2015 and 2017 and his grandparents\u2019 experiences of Japanese Canadian internment during the Second World War, Prior\u2019s collection explores intergenerational memory, cultural trauma, and mixed-race identity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The award was presented by His Excellency, Ambassador to Japan, Yamanouchi Kanji; Canadian Senator Stanley Kutcher; and Michelle Chawla, head of the Canada Council for the Arts. The ceremony took place at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An up and coming sociologist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Taylor Laemmli \u201911<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published an article, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/07352751241242804\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Class Experience Mobility through Consumption, Work, and Relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sociological Theory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The paper has received several awards from the American Sociological Association.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe paper is bold and unconventional; it aims to bring new ideas about the lived experience of class into sociology,\u201d Laemmli said. \u201cThis makes it especially gratifying to have published it in a journal that is central to the discipline.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Her article explores six ways people can achieve short-term social class mobility and examines how these short-term actions might impact long-term class mobility.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been thinking about these ideas in some form or another since I was a sociology major at Macalester,\u201d Laemmli said. She is currently pursuing a PhD in sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"272\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/11-Taylor-Laemmli-272x300.jpg\" alt=\"Taylor Laemmli '11\" class=\"wp-image-25663\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/11-Taylor-Laemmli-272x300.jpg 272w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/05\/11-Taylor-Laemmli.jpg 363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 272px) 100vw, 272px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exploring the path of Chinese migrants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/masterpublichealthdisasters.eu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erasmus Mundus Joint Master\u2019s Degree in Public Health in Disasters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Aaron Zou \u201922 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">completed a thesis project and internship in Colombia that focused on Chinese migrants.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAlthough it is well known that many Latino migrants cross the Darien Gap on their journey to the U.S., many do not know that an ever increasing number of Chinese migrants are doing the same,\u201d Zou said.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through field research in Colombia, Zou aimed to understand the information sources and needs of the migrants, and to research how these migrants form trust with people on their journey.
