Maccolades for September 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maccolades is a monthly round-up of the most recent accolades and accomplishments earned by members of the Macalester community. Below are highlights from September 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A power player in the NBA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Macalester graduate <\/span>Dave Lewin \u201909<\/b> was named to the <\/span>New York Times\/The Athletic<\/span><\/i> NBA 40 under 40 <\/span>list<\/span><\/a>, which highlights rising stars in the league. The list includes front-office executives, coaches, league officials, agents, and union staffers \u2014 media and active players were excluded. According to <\/span>The Athletic<\/span><\/i>, it recognizes those known for their intelligence, success, influence, promise, and talent. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lewin, 37, is the Boston Celtics assistant general manager and beginning his 13th season with the team. He started as a scouting coordinator and contributed to building the 2023-24 NBA champions. At Macalester, Lewin played football and basketball, interned with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and double-majored in economics and mathematics, statistics, and computer science.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDave is brilliant and now works for one of the most well-known professional teams in all of sports,\u201d said <\/span>Abe Woldeslassie \u201908<\/b>, head men\u2019s basketball coach. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

From Mac to Marvel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Macalester graduate <\/span>Ashley Allen \u201921<\/b> will write<\/span><\/a> a new ongoing series for Marvel Comics, featuring Illyana Rasputina, also known as <\/span>Magik<\/span><\/a>. Over the years, Magik has risen to become one of the fiercest X-Men, and the series begins with a hunt for an ancient demon lurking beneath the Alaskan ice. Marvel calls <\/span>Allen<\/span><\/a> a \u201crising star\u201d after her work on <\/span>X-Men: Blood Hunt \u2013 Magik<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m beyond excited to be returning to write Illyana!\u201d Allen said in a <\/span>press release<\/span><\/a>. \u201cSupernatural stories featuring characters with hearts of gold are my favorite, so this series has been a dream to write! I can\u2019t wait for readers to experience the adventure we take Magik on to slay some demons. . . and maybe accept some of her own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allen honed her skills in a visual storytelling class with <\/span>Professor Matt Burgess<\/b>. The first issue will be published in January. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fresh perspective on food security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dr. William (Bill) Moseley<\/b>,<\/span> DeWitt Wallace Professor of Geography,<\/span> published a new book, <\/span>Decolonizing African Agriculture: Food Security, Agroecology and the Need for Radical Transformation<\/span><\/i><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter more than 35 years of working on and studying African agriculture and food security, this book was my way to take a step back and look at the big picture,\u201d he said. He draws on research in Mali, Burkina Faso, Botswana and South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile this is my 11th book, it was my first single-authored monograph,\u201d Prof. Moseley said. \u201cIt was a medium by which I could take a career of research (which mostly appeared in peer reviewed articles only read by specialists), knit it together via an overarching narrative, and make it accessible to a broader public.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The book includes research from many former student collaborators. Judith A. Carney, geography professor at the University of California<\/span>\u2013<\/span>Los Angeles, calls it \u201cessential reading for anyone interested in global food futures.\u201d An open-access version is available <\/span>online<\/span><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advancing liberal arts in the Midwest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

President Suzanne Rivera<\/b> will <\/span>chair<\/span><\/a> the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Board of Directors for the 2024-2025 academic year. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI look forward to working more closely with my colleagues across the ACM,\u201d Dr. Rivera said. \u201cTogether, we will continue advancing the academic excellence our colleges are known for and promote the incredible opportunities a liberal arts education provides students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The boards are made up of presidents and deans from each of ACM\u2019s fourteen member institutions. President Rivera will support ACM\u2019s strategic direction and offer operational oversight to help develop and carry out the consortium\u2019s policies, projects, and major initiatives. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Going platinum with student voter turnout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Macalester was recognized by the <\/span>ALL IN<\/span><\/a> Campus Democracy Challenge for nonpartisan democratic engagement efforts that fostered high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022 midterm elections. Macalester made ALL IN\u2019s inaugural <\/span>\u201cTop Campuses by Voter Turnout\u201d<\/span><\/a> list for four-year private institutions and earned a platinum seal for a voting rate of 50-59%, based on the <\/span>National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement<\/span><\/a> report from Tufts University. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cALL IN is proud to celebrate and honor top-performing campuses, like Macalester College, who demonstrate that nonpartisan student voter engagement is possible and effective,\u201d said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, executive director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grant fuels voter engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Macalester\u2019s Community Engagement Center received a $700 Back to School for Democracy Collaborative Fellowship mini grant from <\/span>Project Pericles<\/span><\/a>, a consortium of colleges and universities that promotes civic engagement within higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grant will support enhancing voter engagement and education among BIPOC students at Macalester, with particular focus on Bonner Scholars. The consortium applauded Macalester\u2019s efforts to empower students to use their voices effectively and engage in civic duties.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
