Below are highlights from September 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A power player in the NBA<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Dave Lewin \u201909<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was named to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">New York Times\/The Athletic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> NBA 40 under 40 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/5399937\/2024\/08\/21\/nba-40-under-40-top-coaches-executives-directors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which highlights rising stars in the league. The list includes front-office executives, coaches, league officials, agents, and union staffers \u2014 media and active players were excluded. According to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Athletic<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, it recognizes those known for their intelligence, success, influence, promise, and talent.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lewin, 37, is the Boston Celtics assistant general manager and beginning his 13th season with the team. He started as a scouting coordinator and contributed to building the 2023-24 NBA champions. At Macalester, Lewin played football and basketball, interned with the Cleveland Cavaliers, and double-majored in economics and mathematics, statistics, and computer science.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDave is brilliant and now works for one of the most well-known professional teams in all of sports,\u201d said <\/span><b>Abe Woldeslassie \u201908<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, head men\u2019s basketball coach.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Mac to Marvel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Ashley Allen \u201921<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/magik-headlines-first-solo-series\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">will write<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a new ongoing series for Marvel Comics, featuring Illyana Rasputina, also known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/magik-illyana-rasputin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Magik<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Over the years, Magik has risen to become one of the fiercest X-Men, and the series begins with a hunt for an ancient demon lurking beneath the Alaskan ice. Marvel calls <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/14626\/ashley_allen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a \u201crising star\u201d after her work on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/114291\/x-men_blood_hunt_-_magik_1_bh_2024_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">X-Men: Blood Hunt \u2013 Magik<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m beyond excited to be returning to write Illyana!\u201d Allen said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/magik-headlines-first-solo-series\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cSupernatural stories featuring characters with hearts of gold are my favorite, so this series has been a dream to write! I can\u2019t wait for readers to experience the adventure we take Magik on to slay some demons. . . and maybe accept some of her own.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Allen honed her skills in a visual storytelling class with <\/span><b>Professor Matt Burgess<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The first issue will be published in January.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A fresh perspective on food security<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. William (Bill) Moseley<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DeWitt Wallace Professor of Geography,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">published a new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cup.columbia.edu\/book\/decolonizing-african-agriculture\/9781788215893\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Decolonizing African Agriculture: Food Security, Agroecology and the Need for Radical Transformation<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAfter more than 35 years of working on and studying African agriculture and food security, this book was my way to take a step back and look at the big picture,\u201d he said. He draws on research in Mali, Burkina Faso, Botswana and South Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhile this is my 11th book, it was my first single-authored monograph,\u201d Prof. Moseley said. \u201cIt was a medium by which I could take a career of research (which mostly appeared in peer reviewed articles only read by specialists), knit it together via an overarching narrative, and make it accessible to a broader public.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book includes research from many former student collaborators. Judith A. Carney, geography professor at the University of California<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Los Angeles, calls it \u201cessential reading for anyone interested in global food futures.\u201d An open-access version is available <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agendapub.com\/resources\/pdfs\/OpenAccess\/MOSELEY_DecolonizingAfricanAgriculture_9781788215909.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/09\/3-Moseley-Cover-Print-v2-cropped-front-William-Moseley-1.jpg\" alt=\"Book cover of Decolonizing African Agriculture\" class=\"wp-image-26121\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advancing liberal arts in the Midwest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>President Suzanne Rivera<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acm.edu\/features\/feature\/acm-announces-new-leadership-on-governing-boards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chair<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Board of Directors for the 2024-2025 academic year.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI look forward to working more closely with my colleagues across the ACM,\u201d Dr. Rivera said. \u201cTogether, we will continue advancing the academic excellence our colleges are known for and promote the incredible opportunities a liberal arts education provides students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The boards are made up of presidents and deans from each of ACM\u2019s fourteen member institutions. President Rivera will support ACM\u2019s strategic direction and offer operational oversight to help develop and carry out the consortium\u2019s policies, projects, and major initiatives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going platinum with student voter turnout<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester was recognized by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allinchallenge.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ALL IN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Campus Democracy Challenge for nonpartisan democratic engagement efforts that fostered high levels of student voter engagement in the 2022 midterm elections. Macalester made ALL IN\u2019s inaugural <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/allinchallenge.org\/top-campuses\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTop Campuses by Voter Turnout\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> list for four-year private institutions and earned a platinum seal for a voting rate of 50-59%, based on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/idhe.tufts.edu\/nslve\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Study of Learning, Voting, and Engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> report from Tufts University.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cALL IN is proud to celebrate and honor top-performing campuses, like Macalester College, who demonstrate that nonpartisan student voter engagement is possible and effective,\u201d said Jennifer Domagal-Goldman, executive director of the ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/09\/5-2022_ALL_IN_Seals_Platinum-10-1-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"ALL IN Platinum Campus badge\" class=\"wp-image-26123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/09\/5-2022_ALL_IN_Seals_Platinum-10-1-250x300.jpg 250w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/09\/5-2022_ALL_IN_Seals_Platinum-10-1.jpg 333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Grant fuels voter engagement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester\u2019s Community Engagement Center received a $700 Back to School for Democracy Collaborative Fellowship mini grant from <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.projectpericles.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Project Pericles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a consortium of colleges and universities that promotes civic engagement within higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The grant will support enhancing voter engagement and education among BIPOC students at Macalester, with particular focus on Bonner Scholars.
