Below are highlights from October 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Their day in moot court<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester entered three two-person teams in the University of Chicago Moot Court Invitational, and for the first time in the five-year history of the program, walked away the champion. There were strong showings by veterans <\/span><b>Riley Hodin \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Reece Robinson \u201926 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and newcomers <\/span><b>Seneca Wilson \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Silvia Lungu \u201928<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, but the toast of the tournament was the duo of <\/span><b>Laila Reja \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Sayuri Cumaranatunge \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. They advanced to the elimination rounds as the 12th seed, and then proceeded to defeat University of California\u2013San Diego, University of Pennsylvania, University of Chicago, and University of California\u2013Santa Cruz to take home the title. Cumaranatunge was also recognized as a top individual competitor.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Moot-Court_Laila-Reja-L_Sayuri-Cumaranatunge-R-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"Moot Court_Laila Reja (L)_Sayuri Cumaranatunge\" class=\"wp-image-26227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Moot-Court_Laila-Reja-L_Sayuri-Cumaranatunge-R-225x300.jpg 225w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Moot-Court_Laila-Reja-L_Sayuri-Cumaranatunge-R-768x1024.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Moot-Court_Laila-Reja-L_Sayuri-Cumaranatunge-R-1152x1536.jpg 1152w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Moot-Court_Laila-Reja-L_Sayuri-Cumaranatunge-R-1536x2048.jpg 1536w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Moot-Court_Laila-Reja-L_Sayuri-Cumaranatunge-R-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Parks and re-creation&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Daniel Trudeau<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, professor and chair of geography, earned the national <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrpa.org\/our-work\/awards\/innovation-awards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Innovation in Equity Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from the National Recreation and Park Association. The award recognizes accomplishment in taking the lead to create an innovative project that improves access to the benefits of local parks and recreation for everyone in the community. The award was given to Ramsey County Parks and Recreation for the \u201cSigns of Belonging\u201d project, to which Professor Trudeau contributed. He expressed excitement about recognition from a national organization for the good work taking place in the Twin Cities, saying, \u201cI feel proud to have contributed to it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Following in Flemming\u2019s footprints&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Arthur S. Flemming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Macalester president from 1968-1971, was a champion for access and was instrumental in creating the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dwlibrary.macalester.edu\/multicultural\/home\/eeo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Equal Educational Opportunity Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He also oversaw the creation of an office of minority programs and an African American Studies program, as well as an increase in the number of faculty and staff members of color.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Decker Anstrom \u201972<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, met Flemming during a 1968 march in St. Paul, sparking a lifelong friendship. Now a Macalester trustee, Anstrom and his spouse, Sherry Hiemstra, helped establish Macalester\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/community-engagement\/engagementopportunities\/flemming-scholars\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flemming Scholars initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to honor Flemming\u2019s legacy. The initiative is aimed at providing funds to help students with some of the expenses involved in moving to Macalester and beginning college life, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a laptop, a warm coat, linens for their dorm room and required course materials. By expanding the web of institutional support, the program intends to foster a sense of belonging for the college\u2019s highest-need students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flemming\u2019s contributions extended beyond Macalester \u2014 he served seven presidential administrations, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and championed social justice. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tspppa.gwu.edu\/arthur-s-flemming-awards\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Arthur S. Flemming Awards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, celebrating 75 years in 2024, continue to recognize public servants making an impact. Past recipients include Dr. Anthony Fauci and Neil Armstrong.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Prize-winning essay shines light on Victorian motherhood<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">English Professor <\/span><b>Andrea Kaston Tange<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> received the Donald Gray Prize for best journal essay in the field published in 2023 from the North American Victorian Studies Association \u2014 the main, interdisciplinary professional organization for 19th-century British studies scholars, which includes historians, archivists, art historians, and literature studies scholars. Her essay, \u201cGestures of Connection: Victorian Technologies of Photography and Visible Mothering,\u201d was published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Victorian Studies<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The judges noted that Dr. Tange\u2019s essay \u201cchallenges conventional assumptions about the invisibility of Victorian mothers\u201d and \u201cprovides a nuanced account of the conflicting imperatives of 19th-century women\u2019s lives.\u201d They described the essay as \u201ceminently readable\u201d and \u201cwritten in fluid, clear, evocative prose deftly organized into a narrative arc.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Hidden-Mother-PHOTO-3-195x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Hidden-Mother-PHOTO-3-195x300.png 195w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Hidden-Mother-PHOTO-3-667x1024.png 667w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/10\/Hidden-Mother-PHOTO-3.png 724w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A world-class act&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of 8,536 institutions worldwide, Macalester ranked in the top 16 percent of universities in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studyabroadaide.com\/2025\/list-best-universities-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Study Abroad Aide\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> 2025 World University Rankings for International Students. This assessment highlights Macalester\u2019s excellence in providing high-quality education and fostering a supportive academic environment for international students.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>An ambassador for peace<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Zhijun He \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was invited to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.positivepeace.academy\/ambassadors\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">serve as a Peace Ambassador<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the Institute of Economics and Peace.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs someone deeply interested in amplifying Global South voices in development discourse, this role provides a platform to ensure that underrepresented perspectives are heard and incorporated into international peace-building strategies,\u201d he said. One of the teams placed fourth. Team captains were <\/span><b>Jean Pateman \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Maita Mungah \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and members were <\/span><b>Liam Klatsky \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Ian Machalek \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Owen Martin \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Kate Caulder \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Maren Fricke \u201928<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Sabri Abdusalam \u201928<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Kofi Anyimadu \u201928<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
