Below are highlights from December 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>High honors from Norway&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Norway\u2019s Minister for Equality awarded the country\u2019s annual Unique Voice Award to three people, including Macalester student <\/span><b>Laura Neal \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Coinciding with the United Nations International Day for Disabled People, this was the first time this award recognized disability justice work. Neal was cited for her efforts to increase access to higher education opportunities for disabled people in Norway. In their nomination, the jury stated: \u201cBeing honest about the challenges and obstacles faced by disabled people in education requires a courageous and brave person like Laura. Through her writing, she has impacted and garnered responses from governors, the Ministry of Education, CEOs, and national leaders, sparking real change in Norway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-19323 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2023\/01\/MarouaneElBahraoui_DSF5532-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2023\/01\/MarouaneElBahraoui_DSF5532-300x200.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2023\/01\/MarouaneElBahraoui_DSF5532-1024x683.jpg 1024w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2023\/01\/MarouaneElBahraoui_DSF5532-768x512.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2023\/01\/MarouaneElBahraoui_DSF5532-1536x1024.jpg 1536w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2023\/01\/MarouaneElBahraoui_DSF5532-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>A seat at the global table<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Marouane El Bahraoui \u201925 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(Temara, Morocco) attended the fully-funded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/worldaffairscouncils.org\/2024-national-conference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">World Affairs Councils of America National Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Washington, D.C., as one of 25 student-scholars selected from a competitive applicant pool.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was an incredible opportunity to represent both Global Minnesota and Macalester among diplomats, think-tank experts, and other leaders in international affairs,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Bahraoui attended panels on international affairs, engaged with panelists from think tanks, research, and political institutions, and asked questions relevant to his academic and professional goals. He also met with the Moroccan ambassador to the U.S. and represented Morocco at dinner tables with other diplomats.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Leading with strings attached&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Professor Thomas Rosenberg<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who teaches cello and chamber music at Macalester, was named Arts Advocate of the Year by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chambermusicamerica.org\/grants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chamber Music America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As artistic director of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association since 1981, Rosenberg has exemplified consummate leadership and a commitment to advancing the arts on a national scale, the organization noted. \u201cHis nurturing of countless ensembles, including those in the junior division, has been an incredible boon for small ensemble growth,\u201d said one nominator, and his work developing extensive community engagement programs has greatly contributed to chamber music\u2019s proliferation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Mac grads mean business&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Two Macalester graduates made the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tcbmag.com\/tcb_year\/2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twin Cities Business 100<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201d a list spotlighting Minnesota business leaders likely to drive change in the year ahead. <\/span><b>Shelley Carthen Watson \u201982<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, president and CEO of YWCA Minneapolis, leads the 132-year-old organization as it tackles modern challenges. Originally a respite for downtown working women, the Y now focuses on early childhood education, after-school programs, job training, and social services for low-income communities. Carthen Watson is addressing two major hurdles from COVID-19: mental health trauma and the decline of a fitness business that once supported the Y\u2019s mission.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Jake Holdreith \u201987<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, managing partner at Robins Kaplan, leads the firm\u2019s health and life sciences industry group. Promoted in March to head the Minneapolis office, he attributes the firm\u2019s growth to attorneys who deliver results and solve complex business challenges. Holdreith notes that intellectual property litigation is increasing in life sciences, high technology, and artificial intelligence.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Shaking up the art world&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Anna Kornbluh \u201999<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is #9 on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/artreview.com\/power-100?year=2024\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPower 100,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the annual ranking of the most influential people in art from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ArtReview<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an international contemporary art magazine. The ranking refers to Kornbluh\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/artreview.com\/what-comes-after-late-capitalism-anna-kornbluh-immediacy-or-the-style-of-too-late-capitalism-verso-review-alex-niven\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Immediacy: Or, The Style of Too Late Capitalism<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as \u201cthe most buzzed-about book of art theory this year, and with good reason.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Tech-savvy leadership&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vice President of Information Technology Services and Chief Information Officer <\/span><b>Jenn Haas<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was named to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tcbmag.com\/notable_category\/2024-notable-women-in-technology\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twin Cities Business 2024 Notable Women in Technology list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In her role, Haas demonstrates that information technology cannot be treated like a mere utility \u2014 instead, it is integral to Macalester\u2019s educational mission. She excels at developing solutions that make teaching and learning at Macalester stronger. Her impact on the information technology field extends far beyond campus through her service as vice chair of the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges. This honor recognizes Haas as a visionary leader who excels in adapting to a rapidly evolving landscape, drives technological advancements, and mentors the next generation of leaders to ensure Macalester remains at the cutting edge of innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-26709 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/12\/jenn_haas_its-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/12\/jenn_haas_its-225x300.jpg 225w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/12\/jenn_haas_its-768x1024.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2024\/12\/jenn_haas_its.jpg 1051w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>All rise for Mac\u2019s moot court&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the Chicago regional tournament, Macalester\u2019s moot court team dominated the competition and qualified all three entries to the next stage of the national event. The team of <\/span><b>Kofi Anyimadu \u201928<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Eva Sturm \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> were undefeated on Day 1 and entered the knock-out stage as the top seed among the 26 teams in the competition, before falling in the quarterfinals. But Macalester\u2019s two other entries reached the knock-out stage as the 3rd and 4th seeds, and then proceeded to eliminate perennial strong programs such as the University of Chicago and Eastern Michigan University on the way to facing one another in the final round of the tournament. In a friendly but fabulous match, <\/span><b>Laila Reja<\/b> <b>\u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Sayuri Cumaranatunge \u201927 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">narrowly topped <\/span><b>Riley Hodin<\/b> <b>\u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Reece Robinson \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to claim the title of regional champion. Reece was also recognized as the third-best individual in the tournament. All three teams will next compete at the University of Kentucky in January.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>A notable CFO&nbsp;<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vice President of Administration and Finance and Chief Financial Officer <\/span><b>Patricia Langer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was named a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tcbmag.com\/notable_category\/2024-notable-chief-financial-officers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Twin Cities Business 2024 Notable Chief Financial Officer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Since stepping into her role in 2021, Langer\u2019s work has put the college on even stronger financial footing.
