Below are highlights from March 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sketching a more inclusive world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Professor Megan Vossler<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, chair of Art and Art History, received a $10,000 grant from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arts.state.mn.us\/grants\/2025\/2025-awarded-ci.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minnesota State Arts Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Professor Vossler will work on \u201cFigure Drawing for Every Body,\u201d an open educational resource for artists. With gender-expansive text and representation of a wide range of bodies, it will introduce figure drawing via inclusivity, accessibility, and diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brainstorming a better democracy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester student <\/span><b>Fabian Flores Solano \u201928<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was selected to participate in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iythinktank.com\/presenting-the-participants-of-the-7th-iytt-youth-conference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International Youth Think Tank Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in April at Georgetown University\u2019s McCourt School of Public Policy. Chosen from a competitive pool of 227 applicants, Flores Solano is one of 24 young leaders selected. The conference will bring together students from 13 countries, all studying at universities across the U.S., to develop visionary proposals on democracy renewal, peacekeeping, and governance. Participants will engage with executive professionals and research scholars, culminating in a final report and presentation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Flores Solano sees the experience as an opportunity to explore global democratic practices and advocate for reforms both at Macalester and in Mexico, his home country. \u201cI strive to provide a social perspective where ideologies intersect with the realities of the world,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emmy-winning film about war heroes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences awarded Macalester graduate <\/span><b>James Silberstein \u201985 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an Emmy for historical documentary in the Central Great Lakes chapter. Silberstein served as executive and supervising producer of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fOHBTCmqUqo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">OVER THERE Hoosier Heroes of the Great War<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,\u201da PBS documentary profiling seven heroes from Indiana who served in World War I. The film aired on all eight PBS stations in Indiana and is now available on YouTube.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe film features six soldiers and one nurse who served heroically in the war,\u201d Silberstein said. \u201cWith the momentum from this film, we are now working on a World War II film.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/03\/4-James-Silberstein.jpg\" alt=\"Jason Silberstein '85 holding an Emmy at the Central Great Lakes Emmy award ceremony\" class=\"wp-image-27139\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/03\/4-James-Silberstein.jpg 600w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/03\/4-James-Silberstein-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Improving cancer detection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A team of three Macalester students \u2014 <\/span><b>William Acosta Lora \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>Thomas Malecha \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and <\/span><b>Laura Neal \u201927<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u2014 presented project recommendations to SentryDX, an early-stage cancer diagnostic company affiliated with Medical Alley in Minneapolis, as part of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/innovation-scholars.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Innovation Scholars Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sentrydx.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SentryDX<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has developed a technology for accurately diagnosing cancer recurrence from a blood draw, called a liquid biopsy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over four months, the students worked at the intersection of science, healthcare, and entrepreneurship, tackling a challenging biomedical project using next-generation sequencing to identify residual cancer in liquid biopsies from patients following cancer treatment.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Their work was guided by campus mentors Elena Tonc, Felix Friedt, Bridgit Jordan, Kathryn Splan, and Liz Jansen, with leadership from Augsburg University MBA student Matt Bolin. Innovation Scholars is a nationally recognized experiential learning program that engages liberal arts students in the complex processes of translational medicine. Project partners include the Mayo Clinic and NASA.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A step toward equity in New Jersey<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Walter Greason<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Dewitt Wallace Professor of History, helped develop a public report on the racial wealth gap in New Jersey. Partnering with the Office of the Governor and Lieutenant Governor, he helped create a historical timeline that informed an executive order to examine structural disparities affecting Black and Latino families. Over two years, hundreds of participants contributed to the research and analysis of a wide range of data. Dr. Greason focused on disparities in housing, education, and discrimination law, tracing inequities back to the state\u2019s colonial roots.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since 2022, more than 30 Macalester students have participated in related research projects. The report marks a major step toward justice and reflects Macalester\u2019s commitment to civic engagement and the power of humanities research.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/03\/5-wg_sample2025-Walter-Greason.jpg\" alt=\"Poster of an event featuring Professor Walter Greason\" class=\"wp-image-27137\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/03\/5-wg_sample2025-Walter-Greason.jpg 600w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/03\/5-wg_sample2025-Walter-Greason-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minnesota\u2019s new chief judge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Minnesota Governor Tim Walz designated Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Jennifer Frisch \u201992<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as Chief Judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cJudge Frisch is a remarkable leader who has the wisdom and compassion to guide the Minnesota Court of Appeals through the challenges ahead,\u201d said Governor Walz in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mn.gov\/governor\/newsroom\/press-releases\/?id=656606&amp;utm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. \u201cShe has a proven track record of leading through consensus, which is essential when guiding a court that is as diverse and talented as the Court of Appeals. She will be great in this position.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A new lens on Bhutan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Dechen Roder \u201902 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">directed and produced a film, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mspfilm.org\/show\/i-the-song\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI, The Song,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that will be shown at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. The heartwarming and thought-provoking film introduces viewers to another side of Bhutan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A sociology nod from Stanford<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Dr. Christina Hughes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, assistant professor of sociology, received a prestigious fellowship from the Stanford Humanities Center for the 2025-26 academic year for her proposal, \u201cBad Refugees: Manufacturing Statelessness at the Margins of Global Northern Citizenship.\u201d This competitive fellowship will support Dr. Hughes during her sabbatical, allowing her to dedicate time to scholarly research and intellectual pursuits. The selection highlights the exceptional quality and significance of her work to interdisciplinary social science and humanities scholarship.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bike-friendly honors<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester ranks 16th among the most bike-friendly campuses in the U.S., according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buycycle.com\/blog\/en\/post\/top-10-bike-friendly-universities\/?srsltid=AfmBOoqbVMIpNareDZByEH4XK8EXvsnoQ2e0hY2MnH-aj_-VoaVoOPwn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">buycycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a leading marketplace for premium pre-owned bicycles. The ranking, based on an analysis of over 200 universities, highlights Macalester\u2019s outstanding biking infrastructure, dedicated bike lanes, and commitment to sustainable transportation. Macalester also offers free bike safety workshops and fosters a strong cycling community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prize-winning look at population policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Xinyi Zheng \u201926<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a sociology major, earned the top prize in the Marianna McJimsey Student Essay Award at the ASIANetwork annual meeting in San Antonio. Her award-winning paper, \u201cManaging Fertility: A Historical Comparative Study on Population Policy in Singapore and China,\u201d finds that while international discourse set a model for development that emphasized population control, countries such as Singapore and China interpreted the model differently and applied it based on distinct domestic political priorities. Once implemented, the interaction between the policies and the population further influenced the final outcomes of these policies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A poetry slam dunk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Metro Regional Arts Council <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mrac.org\/2025\/03\/13\/2025-arts-impact-for-individuals-grantees\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">awarded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Ollie Schminkey \u201916<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a 2025 Arts Impact for Individuals grant. The grant supports artists, creatives, collaborators, conveners, and organizers who expand art opportunities in the region. It provides up to $5,000 for individual-led artistic projects in Minnesota. Schminkey will use the grant to organize a national poetry slam tournament supporting Minnesota poets and bringing community members together through the art of spoken word.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Untangling health inequities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate<\/span><b> Michael Curry \u201991<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will deliver the 2025 Hubie Jones Lecture in Urban Health, \u201cOur Moment to Address the \u2018Taint of Race\u2019 in Health,\u201d at Boston University\u2019s School of Social Work. Curry, president and CEO of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.massleague.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, will discuss health inequities, their origins, efforts in Massachusetts to address them, and the impact of recent federal policy changes. With more than 35 years of experience in civil rights advocacy and health reform, Curry co-founded the Health Equity Compact, a collection of over 85 C-suite leaders of color working to advance health equity in Massachusetts.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clearing the air on carbon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/secondnature.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Second Nature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a leading organization advancing climate action in higher education, selected Macalester as one of seven institutions to receive pro bono consulting services valued at $25,000 each.
