Below are highlights from May 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fueling financial empowerment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester student <\/span><b>Fabian Flores Solano \u201928 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received a 2025\u20132026 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnprivatecolleges.org\/giving\/program-scholarships\/phillips-scholars-program\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phillips Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, one of 10 students selected from Minnesota\u2019s private colleges and universities to develop and run a community-focused summer project in 2026. Scholars receive more than $9,000 in scholarships and stipends. Flores Solano\u2019s project, \u201cCultura, Comercio y Capital,\u201d will focus on empowering the Latino community in the Twin Cities through bilingual financial literacy and entrepreneurship workshops.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis work matters because, too often, Latin@ communities are locked out of financial knowledge and opportunities that should be open to everyone,\u201d Flores Solano said. \u201cWhat excites me most about this award is that it gives me the platform to act: to turn all the ideas I\u2019ve carried with me from Mexico to Minnesota into something real.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/1-Fabian-Flores-Solano.jpg\" alt=\"Fabian Flores Solano leads an activity during an entrepreneurship workshop\" class=\"wp-image-27537\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/1-Fabian-Flores-Solano.jpg 600w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/1-Fabian-Flores-Solano-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joining science\u2019s highest ranks<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Richmond Sarpong \u201995<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the nation\u2019s most prestigious science organization.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cElection to the academy is a very high honor, since they do not elect many members each year,\u201d said Thomas D. Varberg, DeWitt Wallace Professor of Chemistry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sarpong is a native of Ghana, though his family moved to Zambia and then Botswana when he was young. After graduating from Macalester, he earned his PhD from Princeton in 2001 and is now a chemistry professor at the University of California\u2013Berkeley. He researches synthesis of organic molecules.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The art of argument<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester students <\/span><b>Sam Price \u201925<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Will Kochel \u201927 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">advanced to the quarterfinals of the 79th National Debate Tournament hosted by Gonzaga University in April. After winning seven out of eight preliminary rounds, Price and Kochel advanced into the elimination bracket (top 32) as the 5th seed. In addition to their quarterfinalist award, the tournament named Price as the 10th best speaker and Kochel as the 15th best speaker in the nation.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Certified to make a difference<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/3-Torri-Lattimore.jpg\" alt=\"Torri Lattimore\" class=\"wp-image-27531\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Torri Lattimore<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, operations manager at Macalester\u2019s Laurie Hamre Center for Health and Wellness, traveled to Chicago to serve on a task force for the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants. Selected for her expertise as a leading professional in the field, she helped review standards for the knowledge and skills required in the medical assistant profession.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The panel\u2019s work will inform future Certified Medical Assistant certification exams. At Macalester, Lattimore often hosts and supervises medical assistant interns from Hennepin Technical College and Anoka Technical College as part of the college\u2019s commitment to educating the next generation of college health professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Exposing climate injustice in 3D<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/160-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/5-Ronan-Wallace-150x150.png\" alt=\"Headshot of Ronan Wallace '22\" class=\"wp-image-27529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/5-Ronan-Wallace-150x150.png 150w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/5-Ronan-Wallace-300x300.png 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/653\/2025\/05\/5-Ronan-Wallace.png 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Ronan Wallace \u02bc22<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/knight-hennessy.stanford.edu\/people\/ronan-wallace\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> awarded<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship \u2014 the first Macalester graduate to receive this honor. Wallace will join a cohort of eighty-four students from twenty-five countries. The group will receive three years of full tuition and a living stipend to pursue graduate studies at Stanford University. Wallace, a computer science major, plans to earn his master\u2019s degree in computer science.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a computer engineer, he explores 3D imaging and sensor systems for environmental monitoring, cultural preservation, and social impact. He aspires to democratize 3D and 4D computer vision for communities worldwide impacted by climate change. As a Fulbright research scholar in Nepal, his research leverages 3D computer vision and empathy to document climate disasters, vulnerable heritage, and lived experiences. Targeting land and climate injustice, Wallace collaborates with displaced communities to inform local policy and requests for relief aid.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Next stop: Cambridge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Imane Chatri \u201923 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">received the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mastercardfoundation.fund.cam.ac.uk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mastercard Foundation Scholarship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to pursue the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jbs.cam.ac.uk\/masters-degrees\/mphil-technology-policy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MPhil in technology policy at the University of Cambridge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This fully-funded scholarship is awarded to applicants with outstanding intellectual ability, leadership potential, and a desire and commitment to contribute to climate resilient and sustainable futures for Africa and the world at large.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Asking the big questions with NSF fellowship<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Macalester graduate <\/span><b>Sariya Stowers \u201923<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was awarded a prestigious Graduate Research Fellowship by the National Science Foundation. Her proposal focused on the end of Chevron deference and its effects on rule making by the Environmental Protection Agency. The grant will support her research in the PhD program in economics at the University of California\u2013San Diego. The five-year fellowship provides three years of financial support, including an annual stipend of $37,000.
