Parent and Family Orientation Schedule

Orientation for parents and families of new students will be a hybrid of online and in-person sessions. For those who can’t make it to campus, livestreams of the sessions will be made available on this webpage. Throughout the sessions below, parents and family members will hear more about the Macalester campus, get to hear from Macalester faculty and staff, understand the resources available to their student, and learn how to best support their student in their time of transition to College life.

    Meet the library staff, enjoy some refreshments, and have fun. We invite you to stop by the library anytime to look around, say hello, and learn more about our services. Enter a prize drawing, play mini-golf in the afternoon and stay to watch a movie.

    First Generation to College Lunch

    Campus Center, The Loch

    Macalester is home to students, faculty, and staff who are the first in their family to attend college. This session is intended for first-generation college students and their families. As your student begins their college experience, join us to hear perspectives from those who have made this journey, and learn about the people and resources that will support them from orientation to graduation. Enjoy the program for about the first 30 min in the Loch then join attendees and staff outside to enjoy your grab-and-go lunch.

    Campus Tours

    Flagpole (rain: Weyerhaeuser Chapel)

    Join current students or Admissions staff for a campus tour! These 45-minute tours will depart from the flagpole in the center of campus at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm, and 3pm. Space is limited, so tickets are required, and can be obtained at check-in.

    4:00–5:30 P.M.
    Zero Waste Dinner – Campus Wide Picnic*

    Leonard Center, Fieldhouse

    Grab-and-go meals can be eaten outside. Limited indoor seating is available in the Leonard Center Fieldhouse and Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center, Lowe Dayton Arts Common. Check out the campus map for help navigating to these locations.

    4:00–5:30 P.M. Department of Multicultural Life (DML) & Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (CRSL) Welcome Dinner

    Olin-Rice Hall, Smail Gallery

    The DML and CRSL Welcome Dinner is open to students and families who are interested in or keep religious/spiritual/culture practices, are first generation, who identify as LGBTQIA, and/or BIPOC students*

    Grab-and-go meals can be taken outside to eat. Only limited seating will be available inside.

    *You are welcome to attend either or both of the Zero Waste Dinner or DML/CRSL Welcome Dinner! They are both informal, drop-in events.

    6:00–7:00 P.M.
    New Student Welcome

    To allow for physical distancing, only new students and Orientation Leaders may attend this event in person.

    Parents and families are invited to watch the livestream at several viewing locations across campus (Leonard Center Fieldhouse, The Loch in the basement of the Campus Center, or Kagin Ballroom). Check out the campus map for help navigating to these locations. Parents and families may also choose to watch this event from a personal device anywhere on campus using guest Wifi or in their local accommodations. 

    President Suzanne Rivera, senior staff and faculty officers, and Macalester College Student Government President, Shreya Nagdev ’22, will welcome families and new students to the Macalester community.

    Supporting your Student’s Transition to College

    This session will cover a range of ways parents and families can help support their students in the transition to college. This event will feature speakers from a range of support resources on campus.

    There is no formal farewell program or additional in-person offerings after this day. Parents and families are welcome to depart at any time.
