Be sure to stop by so your student can pick up their Mac Pass card, then stop by our Resource Fair and meet staff from The Highlander Bookstore, Student Employment & Payroll, Information Technology Services, the Sustainability Office, and Career Exploration to ask any questions you may have.

This session is for first generation college students and their families. Macalester is home to students, faculty, and staff who are the first in their family to attend college. As you begin your college tenure as a first generation to college student, join us to hear perspectives from those who have made this journey, and learn about the people and resources that will support you from orientation to graduation.


1:00–2:00 P.M. Campus Tour
Meet at flagpole near Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel (Rain Location: Weyerhaeuser Memorial Chapel)

Familiarize yourself with the Macalester campus. 


2:00–4:00 P.M. Life at Mac: The Family Guide

2:00–2:15 P.M. Welcome Address

President Brian Rosenberg, Vice President for Student Affairs Donna Lee, and Associate Dean of Faculty Paul Overvoorde welcome parents and family members of our new students.

2:15–3:10 p.m. Making a Healthy Transition

Staff from the Center for Health & Wellness and Disability Services will provide an overview of resources and discuss ways for you and your student to successfully transition to college.

3:10–3:15 p.m. Break

3:15–3:40 p.m. The Macalester Experience–Student Affairs

Dr. DeMethra LaSha Bradley, AVP for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, will provide an overview of the various ways we support our students. She will also discuss how we respond to emergency situations. 

3:40–4:00 p.m. The Macalester Experience–Academic Programs and Advising

Ann Minnick, Director of Academic Programs and Advising, will provide an overview of academic requirements and the resources available to help students make a successful transition.


4:00–5:15 P.M. Zero Waste Welcome Dinner
Leonard Center, Fieldhouse

Enjoy an all-compostable zero waste dinner with college staff and other new students. This is the last chance for parents leaving right before or immediately after the Welcome New Students program to connect with your student before their evening activities.


5:45–6:45 P.M. Welcome New Students
Leonard Center, Alumni Gym

President Brian Rosenberg, Vice President for Student Affairs Donna Lee, Associate Dean of Faculty Paul Overvoorde, Chaplain Kelly Stone, and Macalester College Student Government President Blair Cha ’20 welcome families and new students to the Macalester community.


7:00–8:15 P.M. Q&A with the President and Parent/Family Reception

Bring your questions to a brief Q&A session with Macalester President Brian Rosenberg, followed by a dessert reception hosted by the Office of Student Affairs to meet and mingle with staff and faculty.

Enjoy lunch sponsored by the Department of Multicultural Life (DML) and Center for Religious and Spiritual Life (CRSL) while learning about the multicultural and religious resources at Macalester. This is a great opportunity to meet the staff who support students of color, LGBTQ students, and students with diverse religious and spiritual practices.
