    This session is intended for first generation college students and their families. Macalester is home to students, faculty, and staff who are the first in their family to attend college. As you begin your college experience, join us to hear perspectives from those who have made this journey, and learn about the people and resources that will support you from orientation to graduation. Enjoy the program for about the first 30 min in the Loch then join attendees and staff outside to enjoy your grab-and-go lunch.

    The DML and CRSL Welcome Dinner is open to students and families who are interested in or keep religious/spiritual/culture practices, are the first in their family to attend college (first generation), identify as LGBTQIA, and/or BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color).     Grab-and-go meals can be taken outside to eat. Only limited seating will be available inside.

    You are welcome to attend either or both of the Zero Waste Dinner or DML/CRSL Welcome Dinner! They are both informal, drop-in events.

    Incoming students are divided up into orientation groups called Scottish Houses. Each house is led by student Orientation Leaders (OLs). Houses will meet in the Alumni Gym in the Leonard Center for their first meeting. The name of your House will be communicated to you via email during the summer and can be found on your Orientation name tag. Look for the sign with your Scottish House’s name when you enter the gym.

    Far From Home: When living away from home for the first time, students have a wide variety of experiences. Most people will be homesick or face cultural differences at some point, but unfortunately, few people talk about it. In this workshop, we will discuss the transition and the variety of coping mechanisms people use to deal with their homesickness.

    Getting Around the Twin Cities: Interested in using transit and/or bicycles to get around and explore the Twin Cities? This workshop will help you to take advantage of the Metro Transit Universal Pass and Macalester bicycle resources. Learn about the major transit routes and bicycle infrastructure close to campus. Ask questions about neighborhoods, and start to feel comfortable getting around the Twin Cities.

    Getting Involved at Mac: Getting involved on campus is a great way to explore your interests, make friends, and find balance as you transition to college.     #ColorOurCollections: Take a coloring break with Macalester College Archives and Special Collections! Launched by The New York Academy of Medicine Library in 2016, #ColorOurCollections is an annual coloring festival on social media during which libraries, museums, archives and other cultural institutions around the world share free coloring content featuring images from their collections. Have fun with coloring books created from materials in our Archives and Special Collections, and get a little college history along the way!

    Effortless Mindfulness: Mindfulness is everywhere these days but in most cases the information doled out in mindfulness sessions either misses the point or gets mired in traditional wrappings that obscure the present opportunity. This session will be both hands on and informational giving participants some solid skills and enough information to wonder for themselves, “what is possible through mindfulness?”

Find a wellness through getting creative, tinkering, making art and new friends and trying something new. This is your space, designed to give you all tools, materials and support you need to realize your world changing ideas or just take a break from your busy life and play a little.
