The college Safety and Security Office is responsible for safety and security on campus. The office is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Macalester campus is located in a safe city neighborhood. However, we continually work with our students regarding their personal safety. We teach them to take their safety seriously by practicing good habits and using the tools available on campus. The Safety and Security Office responds to campus emergencies, conducts routine campus patrols, and serves as a liaison with St. Paul City police, fire and medical emergency agencies.
Emergency Alert Notification
Macalester uses an emergency notification system to send email messages and text messages in the most extreme cases involving the safety of the college community.
In case of Emergency between the hours of 8 AM and 4:30 PM CST call the Office of Student Affairs at 651-696-6220 and we will locate your student if you are unable to make contact. After hours, call the 24-hour Campus Security Officer at 651-696-6555 for assistance. Review the Emergency procedures website for more information.
The SAFEWalk provides a safer walk for Macalester students, faculty, and staff within a one-mile radius from the campus boundaries. Escorts are provided to and from any location within the designated boundaries. The service is operated by students, funded through the Campus Programs, and supervised by Campus Center Staff.
The Safe Walk operation hours are Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 PM until 1:00 AM daily. All requests for escorts made after hours will be referred to Campus Security.
The escorts go out in pairs of one woman and one man and can be identified by their navy blue jackets or orange vests. They carry a flashlight and a two-way radio so as to keep in contact with the dispatcher (the Information Desk Assistant) and the Campus Security Officers.
At times when the Safe Walk persons are not available, Macalester Security Officers will escort community members within the campus boundaries.
