As exceptional problem-solvers, physicists use the most basic laws of the universe to attack its toughest questions. Whether you\u2019re curious about how solar panels convert photons to electricity, or you wonder why black holes send ripples through space-time, the answers lie in physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our professors will guide you through the pillars of the discipline\u2014electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, statistical mechanics, and computational physics\u2014while preparing you to explore the forefronts of knowledge. (And we\u2019ll do it in style, through a little something called Hawaiian Shirt Fridays.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Macalester? Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At Macalester, we think the real work of physics isn\u2019t doing problem sets. It\u2019s shooting laser beams at atom-thick sheets of carbon, or using telescopes to probe the nature of galaxies that are millions of light years away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We live in such an exciting time for physics and astronomy. Improved technology is rapidly increasing the rate of research and discovery, both around the world and here at Macalester. And we guarantee our majors get to take part. Every single Macalester physics major completes an original research project of publishable scope before they graduate\u2014whether they\u2019re working at a professional observatory or side-by-side with their professors in a lab on campus. Astronomy Department celebrated with Anna Williams as she received tenure and promotion\u00a0to Associate Professor at the College!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>October 2025: The High-Power Rocketry Club and Professor Tonnis ter Veldhuis hosted a local Girl Scout group for a model rocket building workshop thanks to support from the Minnesota Space Grant.  The girls built their model rockets at the Macalester Idea Lab under the guidance of team members, and then <a href=\"https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/FCpBEZ3JSzM?feature=share\">launched their rockets<\/a> from Shaw field.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>October 2025: Check out the latest <a href=\"https:\/\/macroconsortium.hflip.co\/MACRO_Newsletter_Volume_3\">MACRO Consortium&#8217;s Annual Newsletter<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>September 2025: 4 student-built rockets were installed in the first floor atrium of Olin-Rice.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/physics-astronomy\/olri-rockets\/\">Photo and interpretive sign can be viewed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>January 2025: The Department of Physics and Astronomy announced they will honor and remember Clara Thomann, &#8217;13, who passed away tragically in December, by&nbsp;giving the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/physics-astronomy\/clara-thomann-outstanding-student-citizen\/\">Clara Thomann Outstanding Student Citizen Award<\/a> to a graduating senior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>23 October 2024: The American Astronomical Society hosted Distinguished Visiting Professor Jay Gallagher to chat for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nxxjsYzfIB8\">AAS Journal Author Series<\/a>. Three of the devices they built will fly on a sounding rocket launched from<strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/wallops\/2021\/feature\/student-experiments-to-blast-off-from-nasa-wallops\">NASA Wallops<\/a>&nbsp;<\/strong>facility in Virginia. Estimated maximum elevation 75 miles. Splashdown in the Atlantic Ocean after a 15 minutes flight.
