All majors will take a common core of physics courses and additional supporting math courses. Under supervision of one or more physics faculty, majors are also required to complete a capstone (or honors) project during their senior year A major in physics provides a rigorous study of many topics in the field that are fundamental for every scientific and technological discipline. The physics major is particularly appropriate for students wishing to pursue graduate study in physics, astronomy, engineering, medicine and related areas, as well as for those seeking positions in technology-oriented business and industry. For example, a double major in physics and computer science would be excellent preparation for graduate study in computer engineering.

Majors must take a minimum of 39 credits in physics (9 core physics/astronomy courses, plus 3 terms of Physics Seminar), as well as 4 supporting math courses.

Physics

Physics with Astronomy Emphasis

PHYS 226 - Principles of Physics I

PHYS 226 - Principles of Physics I

PHYS 227 - Principles of Physics II

PHYS 227 - Principles of Physics II

PHYS 331 - Modern Physics

PHYS 331 - Modern Physics

PHYS 348 - Laboratory Instrumentation

PHYS 370 - Computational Physics

PHYS 370 - Computational Physics

PHYS 440 - Observational Astronomy

PHYS 443 - Electromagnetic Theory I

PHYS 443 - Electromagnetic Theory I

PHYS 461 - Mechanics

PHYS 460 - Astrophysics

PHYS 468 - Statistical Mechanics

PHYS 461 - Mechanics

PHYS 481 - Quantum Mechanics

PHYS 468 - Statistical Mechanics

PHYS 489 - Physics Seminar x3, including spring of senior year

PHYS 489 - Physics Seminar x3, including spring of senior year

Supporting Math Courses

MATH 135 - Applied Multivariable Calculus I

MATH 137 - Applied Multivariable Calculus II

MATH 236 - Linear Algebra

MATH 237 - Applied Multivariable Calculus III

Capstone

Physics majors are also required to engage in an original research project which will meet Macalester's Capstone requirement.
