Students also pursue research during the semester by participating in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/physics-astronomy\/majorsminors\/honors\/\">Honors Program<\/a>. Both options allow students to work closely with professors in the specialty area of the professor.&nbsp;Faculty in the department pursue state-of-the-art research in astrophysics, solid state physics, computational physics, theoretical particle physics, and plasma processing of materials (see the list below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"linked-quotes-block block-container linked-quotes-style-\" >\n      <div class=\"linked-quotes\">\n                 <div class=\"linked-quote\">\n               <div class=\"linked-quote__image\">\n                    <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/physics-astronomy\/teachingresearch\/student\/johncannon\/\" title=\"More information\" target=\"_blank\">                      <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\" style=\"width: auto; display: block;\">\n                    <\/a>                <\/div>\n               <div class=\"linked-quote__copy\">\n                   Professor Cannon is an observational astronomer with a focus on nearby, low-mass galaxies.
