Visiting Assistant Professor

Olin-Rice Science Center, 129

Tom Finzell is a visiting assistant professor who joined the Macalester Physics and Astronomy department in the Fall of 2019. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2017 and did a Postdoc at the University of Michigan (although he is a Wisconsin Badger at heart). His thesis work was on multi-wavelength observations of classical novae, with a specific focus on trying to explain how they produce extremely energetic radiation (gamma-rays). Upon completion of his dissertation work, he shifted his attention towards Physics Education Research. He is currently looking at different ways physics departments can integrate computation into their curriculum, although he still does some work in astronomy. Tom is originally from Saint Paul, and is excited to be back home and working with students here at Macalester.
