Minnesota Opportunity Scholarship Fund
A message from President Suzanne Rivera
Dear Macalester Community,
Before I was appointed as Macalester’s President, I heard in countless conversations about the Macalester family’s passion for effecting change. This summer, I marveled at how the members of this community embodied Mac’s values by joining demonstrations, rapidly fulfilling a matching challenge to support racial justice initiatives in the Twin Cities, and joining in a campus donation drive organized by BLMatMac. I also heard from hundreds of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and others with ideas about how Macalester can support anti-racist work. Your commitment to create a more just and peaceful world is incredibly inspiring.
One hallmark of Macalester is a deep belief in putting ideas into action. Today, we are launching the Minnesota Opportunity Scholarship Fund. The initial contribution approved by the Board of Trustees is a gift of $250,000 in George Floyd’s memory. Managed by Macalester and awarded to Macalester students, this endowed fund will help Macalester sustain and build on its commitment to access for generations to come.
The fund will expand our efforts to recruit and support more underrepresented students of color from across Minnesota. We invite alumni, staff, faculty, parents, and other friends of the college to contribute by making a gift at macalester.edu/mn-opportunity. This initial phase of fundraising will be open to gifts of all amounts until Aug. 31, after which we will announce additional ways in which donors can support racial justice work through annual gifts to the Macalester Fund.
This fund’s creation represents just one step of many that are in the works. The bolder initiatives I have in mind to promote the recruitment and thriving of more underrepresented students, faculty, and staff require deep collaboration and input from a variety of constituencies that I will begin to convene this fall. Meanwhile, please share your own ideas to support Macalester’s racial justice work by emailing me: firstname.lastname@example.org.
