From the Co-Chairs of the Presidential Search Committee

Dear Macalester Community:

We write to you on behalf of the Presidential Search Committee to update you on the status of the search for Macalester’s 17th President. As we shared with you in our last update, the Search Committee conducted second round interviews with selected candidates on November 4 and 5. The four candidates in the second round were asked to prepare discussion topics related to Macalester’s future facility planning and distinctiveness as an urban campus. In addition, the Search Committee continued to explore the candidates’ capabilities around the leadership competencies identified in our leadership profile including deep appreciation for the liberal arts, strong financial and operational acumen, track record of fostering diverse and inclusive communities, communicative and transparent leadership, understanding of and support for shared governance, and inspiring communication skills.

Following the second round of interviews, members of the Search Committee held another campus open house for members of the campus committee to continue to receive input from faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

From the pool of second round interviews, the Search Committee identified two candidates who were invited to campus to meet with groups of faculty, students, staff, senior staff, and trustees in early December. The Search Committee was grateful for the input provided by the members of the campus community who participated in these meetings right before finals began for the semester as it provided valuable insight into the respective strengths the candidates could offer the College.

At this time, the Search Committee, along with our search consultants, Spencer Stuart, continues its due diligence and preparation of its findings on the candidates. We remain on track to provide our final recommendations to the Board of Trustees at its meeting at the end of January.

Thank you to all who have provided input into the leadership profile, referred candidates, attended our open house events on campus, participated in the campus visits, and have otherwise provided input to the Search Committee throughout this process. We are deeply appreciative of the depth of your commitment to ensuring we find the best candidate to be the next President of Macalester College.
