From the Co-Chairs of the Presidential Search Committee

Dear Macalester Community:

On behalf of the Presidential Search Committee, we are pleased to update you on the activities of the committee since we launched the search process last spring.

To date, we have solicited community input into the desired characteristics of a successful future President and used that feedback to inform the leadership profile, which forms the basis both for candidates to assess the opportunity and for the committee to evaluate candidates. The committee met by phone in July to discuss process and illustrative candidate profiles, and in person in August to review written materials available on candidates. While we were on campus in August, we held an open meet and greet at which any member of the Macalester community could meet available committee members on an informal basis.

As we search for a leader experienced in fostering a welcoming and engaged community based on diversity, equity, and inclusion, we have conducted training for the entire search committee on implicit bias and best practices in conducting an inclusive search process. In addition, we have invited two staff members to serve as Affirmative Action advisors to the co-chairs of the committee, and to be available to the committee as a whole. We have worked closely with our search firm, Spencer Stuart, to encourage an inclusive approach to candidate sourcing to facilitate the pursuit of a wide range of candidates that are consistent with the leadership profile.

The committee will meet again on September 17 to discuss candidates, and available committee members will host an open meet and greet that afternoon from 1:15-2:15 p.m. in Campus Center 215. Any member of the Macalester community is welcome to attend. Subsequent to this meeting, the committee will continue to discuss candidates and in-person interviews will take place during the fall.

There has been strong interest in the position, and we are pleased with the quality of the candidates that we have reviewed relative to the leadership profile. We look forward to updating you on our progress.

Kind regards,
