Karine Swensen Moe, F.R. Bigelow Professor of Economics, is the Provost and Dean of the Faculty. Moe taught in the economics department for 20 years and was the department chair at the time of her appointment as Provost in July 2015. A labor economist, Moe graduated from St. Olaf College and received a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School, and MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota. Her teaching includes courses in the principles of economics, the economics of gender, poverty in the U.S., and labor economics. She is the author of numerous articles and book chapters and two books, including the co-authored book (with Macalester anthropology professor Dianna Shandy) Glass Ceilings and 100-hour Couples: What the Opt-Out Phenomenon Can Teach Us about Work and Family.
Moe has held numerous leadership positions at Macalester, including Presiding Officer of the Faculty, Chair of the Faculty Personnel Committee (twice), Chair of the Economics Department, and member of the President’s strategic planning committee. Beyond Macalester, Moe serves as a board member of the Minnesota Institute for Talented Youth and on the Associated Colleges of the Midwest Board of Deans. She also has served on the board of the Metropolitan Area Research Corporation and the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession.
