This number doesn’t include the hundreds of staff, faculty, and student staff that support the week of Reunion preparations, events, and clean up. It warms our hearts to see those able to come to Reunion reconnect and deepen their connection to Macalester and each other.
However, with the growing success of Reunion, we often stretch the limits of physical, logistical, and staff capacity because of our investment in creating meaningful community experiences together. Those things that create the unique shared experience of a Macalester education–small class sizes, intimate connections, tight-knit campus residential life–also create constraints that we work around during a regular Reunion year.
Through resource surveys, conversations on capacity, and lived practice, holding Reunion 2020 and 2021 simultaneously would outstretch our ability to execute a successful and fulfilling experience for Reunion attendees. Over the course of a typical Macalester Reunion, our team organizes and hosts over 70 events in a 72 hour period. It is already challenging to find appropriate spaces, catering, supplies, and staffing to host these events. Unfortunately, our campus simply does not have the room to allow us to double this number for 2021. We ARE planning innovative ways that would allow us to bring together 2020 Reunion alumni in the future. In addition, as always, Macalester Reunion is open to all alumni every year to join us for meals, back to class lectures, tours, open houses, and more.
