Program Board: Creating the Twin Cities: An Environmental History of the Saint Paul and Minneapolis Waterfronts
In the second half of the nineteenth century, the Twin Cities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis grew from tiny, remote outposts on the margins of a rapidly expanding country into large, thriving cities with regional, national, and international significance. The two cities, whose downtown business districts are separated by just fourteen meandering miles of the Mississippi River, both stood at the crossroads between the land and natural resources of the areas now known as Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Canadian Manitoba on one hand and the markets of a growing United States on the other. Drawing on new work from Nature’s Crossroads: The Twin Cities and Greater Minnesota, which he co-edited with George Vrtis, Chris Wells will explain how the two cities rose to prominence in the same half-century of rapid growth. Both absorbed a flood of new settlers and capitalized on the surrounding region’s land and natural wealth, but each city connected Minnesota’s ecosystems to expanding national markets in very different ways.

Students receiving EEO scholarships, in the 1969 cohort, graduated in three to five years and excelled in both retention and graduation rates. Through interactive exercises and group discussions, participants will learn how to engage in reflection to gain clarity on their values, strengths, and aspirations. Macalester Comprehensive Campus Plan 2023
In June of 2022, Macalester, partnering with HGA Architects, began development of its first Comprehensive Campus Plan in 17 years. Nearly a year later, the plan has been endorsed by the Board of Trustees and will serve as both a short term road map and long term visionary plan for the College’s development of the physical campus over the next 20 years. This session will provide an overview of the plan and an opportunity to ask questions.

Macalester Alumni of Moderation…the challenge
Mac loves diversity…but where’s viewpoint diversity? Join Charlie Birge ’15, Jim Burho ’70, and Professor Pete Ferderer, Edward J Noble professor of economics, to discuss why the liberal arts must include a full, robust discussion of views across the ideological spectrum.
