Who does the city belong to? Redevelopment in neighborhoods of St Paul – Historic Hill, Grand Avenue, West Seventh and University Avenue
Unlike many “rust belt” cities St Paul has experienced a resurgence of population and investment in the oldest communities. This illustrated lecture will examine the processes that have shaped a variety of our inner neighborhoods, paying special attention to disinvestment, historic preservation, grass roots political organization, gentrification and of the role of metropolitan agencies.  This will give alumni the chance to talk about how things have changed since they were at Macalester and think about the future of the oldest sections of American cities.

Trash Talk! The Psychology (and Unsustainability) of Garbage
We live in a time of multiple environmental crises: depleted aquifers, air pollution, climate change, plastic pollution in the oceans. In Psychology of Sustainable Behavior, I argue that “environmental problems” in fact do not exist;  they are human behavior problems. Crafting effective solutions to these issues thus requires starting with the human behaviors that lead to them. In this talk I will introduce the complex web of psychological factors underlying our trash.

Self-Representation of China’s Underclass In the Age of Digital Media
In contemporary China, increasing numbers of migrant workers, peasants and marginalized groups use online platforms, social media and apps to express themselves, livestream their daily life and make themselves heard. By examining the online production, circulation and reception of China’s underclass, I argue that the subaltern subjects’ articulation of reality —intensively engage with and critically subvert the middle-class discourses of family, desire, gender, and modernity.
