Student Leadership Programs

BIPOC Student Athlete Collective – As a student-led identity collective, this group aims to support other BIPOC student athletes at Macalester in their athletic accomplishments, while also addressing and discussing important issues related to racial identity in the context of a predominantly white institution. In April, following the police killing of Daunte Wright, the Macalester BIPOCSAC launched a Trauma Relief Fund for the Brooklyn Center community, collecting monetary donations and other necessary resources for redistribution to those in need.

SAMs– Our Student Athlete Mentors (SAMs) group is comprised of one SAM per varsity team. These individuals are resource connectors for mental health and student support services on-campus for their teammates.

SAAC– The Macalester Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is an active group comprised of student-athletes from each varsity sport on campus that works to represent the voice of the student-athlete through discussions at the institutional, conference and national levels. Student-athletes meet to discuss pertinent issues and develop programming to support the mission of NCAA SAAC. Macalester’s SAAC group organizes volunteer initiatives each year, works to promote student-athlete spirit and develop a sense of community and support amongst all Macalester student-athletes.

Student Leadership Programming – A group of coaches and staff from the Athletics Department have partnered with the Department of Entrepreneurship and Innovation to create student athlete leadership development programming that will be formally launched in Fall 2021. Following a human centered design approach, student voice has been involved in every step of the building process. Stay tuned!
