New Faculty Orientation is designed to provide newly hired faculty with the most important and immediate information through a set of talks, seminars, and social occasions in August and January.

Podcasting Workshop

This half-day workshop on podcasting is open to all faculty (not only new faculty) and will incorporate information about assignment design, interviewing and scripting, and equipment and software.

Reflecting on the Past Year / Course Design and Syllabus Development
Location: Library 250
We will begin the morning with a reflection on the context in which we are transitioning to (or back to) Macalester. Following that, a panel of Macalester faculty and staff will share ideas and offer suggestions for ways to build a syllabus, think about course design, communicate key perspectives and policies to students, etc.

Using the Library Effectively for Your Teaching and Scholarship
Location: Library 250
Join us to learn library essentials as you plan your courses and scholarship. We will share information on our print and digital collections; how to request materials for your courses and place items on reserve; interlibrary loan; instruction and consultation opportunities for your students; getting personalized support for your library needs, copyright expertise; incorporating archives and special collections into your courses, and more. We will end with a tour highlighting places in the Library that may be of interest to your teaching, including the Archives, Idea Lab, and Digital Resource Center.

“Just One Thing” about Teaching Writing at Macalester

A panel of faculty will offer lightning round presentations on some of the strategies they use to teach writing in the Macalester context, followed by ample time for Q&A and discussion.

Accommodating Disability and Integrating Principles and Practices of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) (open to all colleagues)

Join Director of Disability Services Melissa Fletcher and Academic Information Associate Brad Belbas to learn about Macalester’s disability accommodations process and engage with a variety of practices that prioritize accessibility and inclusivity in teaching.

Join Academic Technology Services to learn about how to use Macalester’s learning management system, Moodle. We will plan to split into small groups to tailor instruction to your experience level.

Orientation to Macalester (required)
Location: Weyerhaeuser Hall Board Room
You will be welcomed to this required Orientation day by President Suzanne Rivera, Provost Lisa Anderson-Levy, and other key administrators and staff. Throughout the day we will have a variety of chances to get to know one another and start to build connections and community. The day will also include a panel of students and a chance to visit and learn about key places, policies, and people on campus. During lunch, you will have your photograph taken by our Communications and Marketing office.

In addition to the few days that formally comprise “New Faculty Orientation,” the Serie Center offers programming for newly hired faculty (both visiting and tenure track) throughout the year.
