Mathematics in Stone and Bronze

Helaman Furguson

Helaman Ferguson is the foremost sculptor using mathematical themes to generate complex works of art. Each of his pieces represents a sophisticated mathematical theorem. The Smail Gallery exhibit presented six of his small sculptures. These were a prelude to his very large granite sculpture, Invisible Handshake, installed at Macalester in February 2008, and shown above. Curator: Stan Wagon, Mathematics and Computer Science.
