These programs are taught and led by Macalester faculty and staff, and are open only to Macalester students. The study away component of the course occurs during the fall semester, in January, over spring break, or right after the spring semester in May.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The goals of Short-Term Mac-Led Study Away Programs are to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increase student access to high-impact practices through a diversity of embedded study away program models, without negatively impacting semester-long participation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create unique opportunities for students to participate in place-based, experiential, and intercultural learning that connects to the campus curriculum.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recognize and build on the knowledge and expertise of Macalester faculty and staff as related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/global-citizenship\/\">priorities of the Kofi Annan Institute for Global Citizenship<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design sustainable programming through collaboration between faculty and staff across campus, and deep, intentional relationships with partners locally and globally.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The following programs are offered in the 2025-26 academic year:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/macalester-csa.via-trm.com\/program_brochure\/26393\">GEOL 201: Geological Excursions in Argentina<\/a> (January course, study away in January)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/macalester-csa.via-trm.com\/program_brochure\/26395\">AMST\/POLI 294: Gender and Transnational Politics: A Comparison of Northern Ireland and the Southern United States<\/a> (spring 2026 course, study away in May 2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The following programs are offered in the 2026-27 academic year:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/macalester-csa.via-trm.com\/program_brochure\/33183\">ENVI\/GEOG 294 &#8211; You may not take a leave of absence during the semester prior to studying away.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Not be on strict academic or strict disciplinary probation during the semester immediately preceding the course. A student accepted for study away who is placed into strict probation between the time of acceptance and the program start date may have their acceptance revoked. Due to the academic calendar, this could happen at the last minute. Applications for all Mac-Led short-term study away programs offered in the 2026-27 academic will open on February 18, 2026 and are due by March 15, 2026. Therefore, attendance and active participation in all pre-departure and on-site activities are required. Failure to attend classes or required activities may affect your grade. It is your responsibility to communicate any planned absences or extenuating circumstances with the program leaders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Credits &amp; Grading:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Upon acceptance, you will receive instructor\u2019s permission to enroll in the course. Credits earned will be published on each program\u2019s page.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Grading, as for on-campus courses, will be established by the program leaders in accordance with the academic policies outlined in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.macalester.edu\/index.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">College Catalog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1qha1tNxyshdw9k2zXpbFA_GtGSJ1_wqkATwX5uBiBAg\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The grade received will appear on your transcript and count in your Macalester GPA. You are able to declare a course as pass\/fail following the process and deadlines summarized on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/registrar\/studentresources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Registrar\u2019s website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, as with any other on-campus course.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For courses where travel takes place at the end of the term (e.g., January travel after a fall course or May travel after a spring course), you will receive an Incomplete (\u201cI\u201d) designation to account for academic activities and requirements that take place off-campus. The study away course for which you register is considered part of your normal semester enrollment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will be charged a program fee to participate in the course\/program, which includes round-trip airfare from St. Paul, on-site transportation, lodging, most meals, group academic and cultural activities, international health insurance (if applicable), and emergency support. Depending on the program and location, group visa processing may also be included in the cost of the program; if not, it is your responsibility to research, apply, and pay for any applicable visas. The program fee does not include first-time passport applications or renewals, some meals, or personal expenses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Non-Billable or Out-of-Pocket Expenses:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Your Macalester bill will not include your extra, individual expenses. Macalester&#8217;s Center for Study Away (CSA) staff has done its best to estimate what you may need to spend in addition to your billed expenses for your time away (e.g., additional meals, books and supplies, personal expenses). These estimates are program-specific. Please note that the final cost of some of these items will be determined by you, based on your personal spending habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Budget Sheets:<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Each program\u2019s expenses are listed on its budget sheet (found on the individual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/macalester-csa.via-trm.com\/visitor-programs-v2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">program page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> on the CSA website or via the &#8220;View Program&#8221; button on the \u201cMy Programs\u201d tab of your study away portal). There you will see the total estimated program costs, how they are charged, and any notable details, as a reference for planning purposes. These budgets &#8211; both the billable and non-billable sections, as described above &#8211; act as the Cost of Attendance for your program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Billing &amp; Payment:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">No application fees or deposits are required to solidify your place in the course\/program. After you officially commit to the program in your study away portal, you are subject to the policies outlined below. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will be billed normal semester tuition and the program fee outlined in your program\u2019s budget. You will receive a Macalester invoice from the Student Accounts Office, and you will <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/studentaccounts\/payments-2\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pay for these fees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the same manner, and within the same due dates, as any other Macalester bill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><span data-offset-key=\"c8d0a-0-0\">Due Dates:<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<ul class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-ul\" data-offset-key=\"1jj7-0-0\">\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-reset public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"bkfkm\" data-offset-key=\"1jj7-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><span data-offset-key=\"1jj7-0-0\">Fees for a short-term study away course in the fall semester with associated travel taking place in December or January will be due on <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"1jj7-0-1\">August 15<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"1jj7-0-2\"> (same date that fall tuition is due).<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"bkfkm\" data-offset-key=\"54bvp-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><span data-offset-key=\"54bvp-0-0\">Fees for a short-term study away course in the spring semester with associated travel taking place during Spring Break or in May will be due on <\/span><span data-offset-key=\"54bvp-0-1\">January 15<\/span><span data-offset-key=\"54bvp-0-2\"> (same date that spring tuition is due). <\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-unorderedListItem public-DraftStyleDefault-depth0 public-DraftStyleDefault-listLTR\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"bkfkm\" data-offset-key=\"3aidu-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\"><span data-offset-key=\"3aidu-0-0\">Any outstanding balances may result in finance charges, account holds, or prevent you from receiving a transcript. Please ensure you pay all fees in a timely manner.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Withdrawals:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After you are accepted into the program, you will be asked to \u201ccommit\u201d to your participation in the study away portal. At that time, you are consenting for the College to start planning and making financial commitments on your behalf. Generally, the closer to departure you withdraw, the greater the cost. Macalester needs to meet program-specific deadlines set by partners and vendors and make payments on your behalf well before the program starts. In addition, late submission of forms delays the registration process, the financial aid process, the posting of fees to your Macalester account, and pre-departure events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you anticipate not being able to participate in the course and\/or the program after you commit, please contact the CSA as soon as possible.<span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Given that the study away component is a required part of the course, withdrawal means you are dropping the course completely and will earn no credit. All withdrawal notifications must be submitted via the instructions on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/study-away\/change-of-plans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Change of Plans website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, the CSA reserves the right to withdraw you from a program if you fail to complete mandatory pre-departure requirements, fail to attend orientation events, or other warranting situations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the event of withdrawal:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7ud86-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"7ud86-0-0\">Prior to the time of commitment: no fees will be charged.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7ud86-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"5remv-0-0\">After commitment to the last day to add\/drop the course: $200 of the program fee will be charged.* <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"7ud86-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"8kg24-0-0\">After the last day to add\/drop the course: the full program fee will remain and no refunds will be issued.*<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>*In the event of a withdrawal prior to or during travel due to extenuating circumstances, documentation will be required and any refunds will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Program Cancellation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Director of the CSA, in consultation with other officials at Macalester, shall determine whether conditions warrant cancellation of the program (e.g., low student enrollment, health\/safety concerns, etc.). If Macalester cancels a study away program prior to departure, the program fee will be refunded. Financial aid is available to help students who need assistance covering the expenses of study away programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">All students are eligible to apply for financial aid using the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) application.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You may use loans, grants and scholarships toward your study away costs. If you have never applied or received financial aid before, you are strongly encouraged to consult with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/admissions\/financial-aid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Financial Aid Office.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Study Away shares all study away program budgets with the Financial Aid Office in order to provide them with each Cost of Attendance, which allows them to include the billable (fees applied to your Macalester account) estimates as well as the non-billable (additional or out-of-pocket) estimates not covered in the program fees, such as meals not provided or personal expenses, when determining your financial aid award. If you intend to make payments with financial aid, you are held accountable for the full cost of your study away fees even if you do not receive some or all of your anticipated aid. If the financial aid funds are higher than the fees you owe on your account, you may request a refund for the surplus from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/financial-aid\/policies\/offcampusstudy\/#away6\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Accounts Office<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for the difference.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Grants &amp; Scholarships:<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Students who receive need-based aid will be eligible for a short-term Mac-led (STML) study away grant equal to the proportion of financial aid covering tuition in a normal semester. For example, if your need-based aid pays 50% of your full-time tuition, you will receive a short-term study away grant that pays 50% of the study away program fee. The maximum grant will be capped at the billed program fee.<\/p>\n<p>Students may request an estimate of their STML grant by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/forms.gle\/uzBBng7hYyYo3SNw7\">completing this request form<\/a>. The estimated grant will be based on the proration of need-based aid to tuition for the current semester. Finalized grant amounts will be released on the financial aid letters sent out in early June. Regardless of financial need, all students may choose to borrow a loan to cover the cost of the program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you receive merit-based aid only, you do not qualify for a grant at this time. If you are unsure if they have need-based or merit-based aid, you can connect with the Financial Aid Office. You may also contact them to inquire about loan options that might be available, if you are in need of additional financial assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition to relying on your Macalester financial aid package, we encourage you to seek out additional scholarships, including those that could be specific to study away.
