Many programs and universities will require a health form as part of your confirmation materials. Macalester’s Health and Wellness Center will do study away physicals or can refer you to other physicians in the area.

Check with the Centers for Disease Control or your program for more information. Think about other health considerations such as visiting a travel clinic before you go, accessing health care while away, health insurance coverage, etc.
Health Insurance Coverage
Just as when you study at Macalester, you are responsible for ensuring that you have appropriate medical coverage for accidents and illnesses while you are studying away. If you have elected to use the Macalester Student Health Insurance it provides coverage worldwide. You can read more about coverage details on the Health and Wellness Center’s website. In addition, some study away programs include or require insurance policies as part of their enrollment fees. For those that don’t, it is extremely important to make sure you have medical insurance that will provide for essential medical coverage at your study away site. If you find that you need to purchase health insurance coverage while you are out of the country, you may find Macalester’s Center for Health and Wellness Travel Insurance website to be helpful. Be aware that in most cases you will need to pay for your medical care at the time of service and be reimbursed after you return home and file a claim for reimbursement.
Even if you end up purchasing additional insurance for medical coverage outside of the U.S. you should maintain your primary US health insurance coverage throughout your study away semester. This is especially important should the unexpected occur and you have to return to the US for medical care.
Travel Insurance Coverage
For all Macalester College students, faculty, and staff traveling on college-related activities, including study away, Macalester has purchased a policy that covers the following services that are not typically covered by individual health insurance plans:
- Emergency medical evacuation
- Evacuation in cases of political unrest or natural disaster
- Repatriation of remains
This coverage is provided through Gallagher Global Assistance. Information about using this coverage will be provided to study away students as part of the pre-departure orientation process.
IMPORTANT: Note that Macalester’s travel coverage is only valid during the program dates and does not cover independent travel prior to the program start date, or upon completion of the program. If you plan to extend your stay beyond the program dates and wish to have travel insurance coverage, we recommend purchasing a supplemental travel insurance policy. The Center for Study Away can assist you in identifying reputable vendors.
