Endowment gifts have a lasting impact on the college and future generations of students. The endowment principal remains untouched and approximately five percent of the endowment’s value is used each year to support the college’s operating budget. For more information on Macalester’s endowment, please click here.

Current endowment priorities are a reflection of the college’s strategic plan, and include:

  • Financial aid including endowed scholarships. Endowing a new named scholarship begins at $100,000. Gifts less than that amount can potentially be added to existing or pooled endowed scholarship funds.
  • Faculty and academic support including endowed professorships and student/faculty research. Endowing a professorship begins at $2 million and a research initiative begins at $125,000. Gifts at other levels may potentially be added to existing endowed research funds.
  • Program support including support for the Career Development Center, internships, and our Entrepreneurship program. Endowed funds to support any of these areas begin at $100,000. Gifts less than that amount can potentially be added to existing endowed funds directed to these programs.

Endowment gifts can be made outright, as a planned gift, or a combination of these two approaches. Planned gifts established by donors who will be 65 years of age by May 31, 2020, can be counted as part of the Macalester Moment campaign.
