Both works were selected by a panel of 30 judges from across the state and stand as one of four finalists in each genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><em>Theophanies<\/em>, published by Alice James Books, looks to the Quran and the Bible as lenses through which Professor Ali intricately examines the women\u2019s role in family and faith. This year was her first full term in the department, and she is wrapping up the spring semester teaching the poetry capstone, as well as ENGL 280- Crafts of Writing: Poetry: The Engine of Obsession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2025\/04\/sally-full-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10677 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2025\/04\/sally-full-1024x1024.jpg 1024w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2025\/04\/sally-full-300x300.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2025\/04\/sally-full-150x150.jpg 150w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2025\/04\/sally-full-768x768.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2025\/04\/sally-full.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><em>Big in Sweden<\/em>,<em> <\/em>published by Mariner Books, follows an American woman\u2019s journey to discover her Swedish routes\u2013 by means of a Swedish reality tv show. Chosen as a finalist for the Genre Fiction category of the Minnesota Book Awards, former Professor Franson has received abundant praise for her work by everyone from Meg Ryan to the <em>Washington Post<\/em>. Her previous novel, <em>A Lady\u2019s Guide to Selling Out<\/em> was also a Minnesota Book Awards finalist, capturing readers with the same wit and vibrant characterization.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sally Franson taught creative writing courses at Macalester for approximately three years, starting in 2019. Since leaving the department, Franson\u2019s careers have spanned from a Swedish reality TV star to a full-time author.
