Accompanied by a singing performance with English major senior Eva Markham \u201925 and the Year in Review slideshow running in the background, the English community gathered to enjoy a celebration meal together. Students who completed Honors Projects and Capstones in the fall of 2024 and in the spring of 2025 were asked to stand. He also acknowledged the contributions of student organizations, including Chanter, MacSlams, <em>The Mac Weekly,<\/em> Spaces, Hegemonocle, and A Novel Idea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, the English Honors Society officers Leah Wasson \u201925, Daniel Graham \u201926, and Natalie Mazey \u201926, spoke briefly about the work of the honor society this year. They also introduced the new EHS officers, Lucy Flack \u201927, Peyton Williamson \u201927, and Paul Wallace \u201927, who will be in place next year. The winners were called to the front to receive their certificates to the audience&#8217;s applause.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winners of the Ardis Hillman Wheeler Prize for International Study award were Lucy Flack \u201927, studying away in Granada, Spain, Lucy Holberg \u201927 studying away in Scotland and Sophia Woods \u201927 studying away in Argentina.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winner, as well as the honorable mentions, for the Charles Baxter Short Story Contest were announced by Macalester\u2019s very own Charles Baxter \u201969. There were three honorable mentions: Daniel Graham for <em>Love Letters Incorporated<\/em>, Carling McQuinn \u201925 for <em>Slight Pinch,<\/em> and Sam Kenney for <em>Claudia, the Old Subaru, and Everything Inside. <\/em>The winner of the Charles Baxter Short Story Contest was Birdie Keller for their short story, <em>The Dead Bird Museum.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Academy of American Poets Poetry Prize winner and honorable mention were highlighted for their outstanding submissions. The honorable mention was Kai Illig for their collection <em>Saint \/ Stain, Trojan, and Garlands. <\/em>Katherine Norquist was the prize winner for their collection <em>Playing Horse, Bad Form, and Good Form.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Harry Scherman Writing Award winners were celebrated for their excellence in creative prose, literary analysis, and poetry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the creative prose category, there were three winners: Birdie Keller\u2019s <em>The Dead Bird Museum, <\/em>Carling McQuinn\u2019s <em>Ghost Town, <\/em>and Alma Angantyr\u2019s <em>Triple Dog Dare.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For literary analysis, there were two winners. Leah Wasson\u2019s <em>This Masquerade is BYOB (Bring Your Own Disability): A Study of Queen Margaret\u2019s Portrayal of Disability in Shakespeare\u2019s Richard III <\/em>and Eva Markham\u2019s <em>Toni Morrison\u2019s Magical City [a city should really only be a city] <\/em>took the award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the poetry category, there were three winners: Katherine Norquist\u2019s <em>Playing Horse, <\/em>Lucy McNees\u2019 <em>Webb Lake, Maine, <\/em>and Marley Craine\u2019s <em>Developments.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 45%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>The Wendy Parish Poetry Award is given to students who exemplify a commitment to poetry and excellence in writing. Then everyone gathered for photos and to enjoy ice cream paletas to provide a sweet end to the 2024-2025 academic year for the English Department.
