The year coming to a close is a time of sadness for those of us left behind, and a time of excitement for graduating seniors on their way to greener pastures. Before the semester officially ends, various departments on campus, including the English Department, honor students for their particular excellencies in various areas with several awards. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Words<\/span><\/i>\u2019s own Senior Editor Spectacular, Zeena Fuleihan \u201918 received the Honorable Mention in the <\/span>Nick Adams Short Story Contest <\/b>for her story \u201cZa\u2019atar Croissants.\u201d Each year, Macalester recognizes a few seniors for outstanding contributions to the Macalester community throughout their college careers with the <\/span>Presidential Leadership Award for Outstanding Seniors.<\/b> This year, two English Majors received the award: Ariana Hones \u201918 and Zeena Fuleihan \u201918.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cole Chang \u201919 won the <\/span>Gateway Prize for Excellent Writing in the Humanities<\/b>.<\/strong> The Gateway Excellent Writing Award for Poetry<\/strong> went to English Minor Jonathan Amezquita \u201918. M.L. Kenney \u201918 was nominated as the Student Educator of the Year.<\/strong> A Collaborative Summer Research Grant <\/em><\/strong>was given to Roan O’Neill \u201920 with Professor Amy Elkins. The Creating Lifelong Learners Grant <\/strong>to make a film called “Kinship of Rivers” was given to Harrison Runnels \u201920 with Professor Wang Ping.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At our End of Year Celebration, the English Department also gave out department awards. The <\/span>Ardis Hillman Wheeler Prize for International Study<\/b>,<\/strong> an award for students studying abroad, went to Ben LeBlanc \u201920, Zoe Berkovitz \u201920, and Andrea Salas de la O \u201920. <\/span>Bethany Catlin \u201919 for “American Daughter,” Ally Moore \u201918 for “Rituals,” and Zeena Fuleihan \u201918 for “Za’atar Croissants” and “Regression” were chosen as departmental finalists for the <\/span>Nick Adams Short Story Contest<\/b>.<\/strong> The Macalester finalist for <\/strong>the Academy of American Poets College Prize<\/b> was Charlie (Ngoc) Pham \u201920, and Claire Grace \u201919 was given Honorable Mention. The Harry Scherman Writing Contest for Seniors<\/b> was won by Leon Swerdel-Rich \u201918 and Liza Michaeli \u201918 for Literary Criticism, John Ratz \u201918 and Zeena Fuleihan \u201918 for Creative Prose, and Spencer Fugate \u201918 for Poetry. For English Majors who exemplify a commitment to poetry and excellence in writing, Spencer Brownstein \u201918, Andrew Becker ’18, and Zeena Fuleihan \u201918 won the Wendy Parrish Poetry Award<\/b>.<\/strong> Zeena Fuleihan \u201918 won the <\/span>Livingston-Patnode Award<\/b>,<\/strong> which is given to a graduating senior who has made a special contribution as an English major. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
