Andrea is a California native studying creative writing and media and cultural studies. She is a fierce Latina who intends to reinvent the fashion magazine industry and take over Anna Wintour\u2019s position at Vogue. In the meantime, you can find her stomping around campus in a pair of heels, figuring out her angle, her aesthetic, and her first big step after Macalester.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thank you so much to Andrea for sharing your work with us! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>I. holly golightly teaches me about depression<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you mean it\u2019s like the blues?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no, she replies innocently and ever so soft<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">says the blues<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the blues are for when you\u2019re feeling fat<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">when it\u2019s raining and you\u2019re sad.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">she tells me there in the comfort of my room<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that the reds, the reds are of a different breed, horrible<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">never seem to go away<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">catch you when you\u2019re afraid<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">don\u2019t even know what you\u2019re afraid of. . .<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they\u2019re horrible that way.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">i said well maybe you\u2019re afraid of love.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">her brown eyes catch mine in the reflection of the mirror<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as i watch her clip those diamond earrings on before she checks the weather.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cyou mustn\u2019t give your heart to a wild thing.\u201d<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">are you saying we\u2019re wild things, I ask her.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">she gazes over at me for a second, and the truth seems to get stuck in her throat<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">so in turn she looks back at a boy who says he loves her, hesitantly, with a smile.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">smoke from her elongated cigarette catches fire in my heart<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. . . we belong to nobody. nobody belongs to us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">two very lovely, very frightened girls.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stuck in cages we built ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">II. No tears Maria.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The children might hear,<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Puff on a cigarette<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And swig on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">El Patron<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and cheap beer.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t what I planned on.\u201d<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBut you knew he wasn\u2019t loyal.\u201d<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll I wanted was a man.\u201d<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHow\u2019s it feel to have a dog?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Maria, Maria,<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When did you ever listen to mom?<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She was clear on her stance.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Don\u2019t get married.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Men are pigs, men are snobs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019ll expect his dinner hot before sundown<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019ll want his clothes fully washed.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You knew this going in love,<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It hurts to see you try and climb out.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dejalo hermanita.<br><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Look to the stars to lead the way.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just how Pap\u00e1 taught us when we were kids <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mi amor<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before he left for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">el Norte<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, before he abandoned us all.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you wait a while and listen, you\u2019ll hear the coyotes howling at the moon.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Follow them Maria,<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And you\u2019ll be in the city of angels soon.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Free from Rogelio,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back to Mam\u00e1 and me.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alex Harrington \u201919 We are honored to present the creative work of Andrea Salas-de la O \u201920 for this month\u2019s edition of Wordplay!
