As an international student from Thailand, Sumpunkulapak felt a distinct distance between herself and domestic students. Her friend Xavier Xin \u201920 had a similar experience.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe met during our first year when everything was confusing and we found it really hard to adjust to Macalester as international students,\u201d Sumpunkulapak said. \u201cMost of our other international friends also had trouble adjusting here or making friends with domestic students.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She continued, \u201cThat kind of feeling of coming here for your first year, not knowing anyone, not knowing the country, not knowing how to socialize, not getting American jokes, not knowing how to make small talk or finding house parties really weird, not [being] accustomed to the culture here is really hard, and it\u2019s even harder when you think you\u2019re experiencing that alone. But you\u2019re actually not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">That\u2019s where <em>Home<\/em> Magazine comes in. Sumpunkulapak and Xin founded the magazine in the spring of 2018 as \u201ca voice for international students.\u201d They serve as editor-in-chief and literary editor, respectively. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In Sumpunkulapak\u2019s words, <em>Home<\/em> is \u201chalfway between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Mac Weekly <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <em>Chanter<\/em>.\u201d The online magazine publishes both op-eds, interviews, and other non-fiction writing, but also features poetry, photography, and other forms of visual art. Recently, <em>Home<\/em> has started <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bringinghome.squarespace.com\/the-yproject\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Y-Project,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> a hybrid between a video project and an advice column that welcomes questions about the experience of being an international student. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Across these varied media, <em>Home<\/em> consistently explores themes relating to internationalism. Sumpunkulapak is interested in posing questions, not giving definitive answers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-medium wp-image-1708\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2019\/04\/shou-yu_evangeline-ng-19-300x226.jpg\" alt=\"Shou Yu\" class=\"wp-image-1708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2019\/04\/shou-yu_evangeline-ng-19-300x226.jpg 300w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2019\/04\/shou-yu_evangeline-ng-19.jpg 718w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Shou Yu&#8221; by Evangeline Ng &#8217;19.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen you have people coming from different backgrounds, different countries, different cultures, we try to present those ideas and then have the audience decide which one they like to consider,\u201d Sumpunkulapak said. \u201cI think that\u2019s what Macalester has to foster more, is presenting different perspectives and different ideas, rather than making someone have to say this particular thing in a particular way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She cited an op-ed by Chuan Ping \u201922 titled <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bringinghome.squarespace.com\/oped-american-friends\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cShould International Students Make American Friends?\u201d <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as an example of Home\u2019s commitment to opening up conversations on difficult topics.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe realize that [the Macalester community] is really afraid to talk about race or [other] sensitive issues because they\u2019re scared that they\u2019re wrong. We also try to dive into that direction as well,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The topic of Home\u2019s upcoming fifth issue is \u201cHome at Mac\u201d: as Sumpunkulapak puts it, \u201cHow do you make Macalester or Minnesota your home?\u201d Unlike previous issues, this one will feature only visual art.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Home Magazine <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bringinghome.squarespace.com\/creativeworks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">welcomes submissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for their upcoming issue from domestic and international students alike on their website, where you can also sign up for their newsletter.
