They were born in Germany but spent the majority of their life in small town Alabama (Roll Tide!) They\u2019ve always loved writing and experimenting with putting common life experiences into poetic wording, and this year is the first time in a long time they found the courage to share their work with others. Their favorite book at the moment is \u201cThe Girl Who Can Move Sh*t with her Mind\u201d by Jackson Frost (although they\u2019ve yet to finish it), and their favorite poet is Alok Menon.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please enjoy Jessi-Alex\u2019s poems!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>You know that feeling?<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nostalgia is a lot like going into a city that you\u2019ve only been in<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">once, but you\u2019re convinced you grew up in it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or maybe&#8230;it\u2019s more like that song<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you used to sing along to on the radio<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">playing softly in the restaurant<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you\u2019re eating out in<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you pick up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">juuust enough<br><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to get the bass<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">not enough to remember the lyrics, but<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that warm, bubbly feeling still rises in your gut<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and you smile a bit as the memories come<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">flooding in&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nostalgia is looking at your life<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as if it\u2019s a scene from your favorite movie<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that you rewind over<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and over<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and over<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Again.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When a voice feels like church bells<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or a hug a well-worn hoodie<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When home is not just in a person<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or a place<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but also a moment in time.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I hope when my friends think of me<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They feel nostalgic too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Golden Hour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Did you know there was a time of day<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you could see what honey would look like<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If it was drizzled over a building<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or the Great Lawn?<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When every person looks a bit sweeter<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Than usual<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And their faces glow in a way<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only genuine smiles<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Could copy.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dusts of pollen sprinkled in the air<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And onto the hair<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of the people around you<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And your furry friend<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As it rests softly by the window.<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hot honey soothes the soul<br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Just like it soothes a throat<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sophie Hilker &#8217;20 The Words is pleased to announce that for our inaugural 2019-2020 issue, we will be showcasing the work of Jessi-Alex Brandon \u201920.
