All were honored at our annual End-of-Year Celebration, which you can <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1jGxlzp6i0A3Qga-9CForeeGxogLRjc-n\/view\">view a recording of here.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Livingston-Patnode Award<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is an annual award for a graduating senior who has made a special contribution as an English major throughout their time at Macalester. This year\u2019s winner is Amy Vandervelde, for whom this well-deserved accolade comes after many years acting as a department student worker, English Honor Society officer, and all-around lovely presence in the English department.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Wendy Parrish Poetry Award<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, given to English majors exemplifying a commitment to poetry and excellence in writing, was split between Conor Broderick and Gabriel Fisch.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Harry Scherman Writing Contest For Seniors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">honors senior English majors who present the most outstanding manuscripts in one of three categories: literary analysis, creative prose, and poetry.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the literary analysis category, three winners were chosen: Asher de Forest, for his paper \u201cThe Scottish Play Horror Film: Close Reading \u2018Horrality\u2019 in Two Scenes from Rupert Goold\u2019s Macbeth\u201d; Amy Vandervelde, for \u201cProphetic Players: How Language Likens Two Kings in Shakespeare\u2019s Richard II\u201d; and Katie Woodhouse, for \u201cWhat We Talk About When We Talk About Editors: Gordon Lish and Raymond Carver\u2019s Problematic and Prosperous Literary Relationship\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the creative prose category, four winners were chosen: Eric Fong, for his short story <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Garden.exe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; Albert Lee, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u77e5\u97f3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; Becca Lewis, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ringot<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; and Zarra Marlowe, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">three days in inpatient<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And in the poetry category, one winner was chosen: Conor Broderick, for his poem \u201cSong Poem II.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Academy of American Poets College Prize <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is offered to students for the best three-poem collection and is judged independently by a representative of the Academy of American Poets. The English department selects two poets annually to represent the school in the contest, one winner and one honorable mention.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s honorable mention went to Charlie Pham, for the poems \u201cHow to Tell It\u2019s Winter in Vietnamese\u201d; \u201cMonth of Legumes, Year of the Ox (or: Cemetery Field Notes)\u201d; and \u201cOde to Long-time Nuclear Waste Warning Messages.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This year\u2019s winner was Shelby Kruger, for the poems \u201cThere is a Scar on My Father\u2019s Leg\u201d; \u201cSkeleton House\u201d; and \u201cGerman Apple Strudel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Ardis Hillman Wheeler Prize for International Study, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">established in honor of Ardis Hillman Wheeler \u201838, who devoted her life to teaching English to refugees after WWII and later in Minnesota public schools, is awarded to majors to support their study abroad experiences in the next academic year. Two recipients were selected: Dalton Greene, who will be studying in England at the University of Oxford, and Anna Sverclova, who will be studying in South Africa at the University of Cape Town.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Nick Adams Short Story Contest <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is sponsored by the Associated Colleges of the Midwest and honors outstanding short stories by ACM students. Four Macalester students were selected to participate in the ACM-wide contest, which was judged this year by author Sandra Cisneros. These four finalists were Zoelle Collins, for her story <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shamuna<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; Eric Fong, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Garden.exe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; Albert Lee, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u77e5\u97f3<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; and Becca Lewis, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Vermeer Yeller<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Congratulations to all of our nominees, finalists, and winners!
