The Semester Ahead:<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This year, English Honor Society (EHS) is back with community events, book talks, and volunteer opportunities! The annual fall induction dinner will take place in late October or early November and celebrate the newest EHS members. Next spring, Apps & Alums will be back with the perfect opportunity to network with Macalester alumni, professors, and students while snacking on delicious appetizers. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EHS is also putting together a calendar of lectures, plays, readings, and more book-related events in the Twin Cities. All EHS members will have access to the calendar, and EHS will help coordinate rides to some larger events.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Officers:<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This year, Lily Duquette \u201822, Gabby Helf \u201823, and Ella Rehman \u201823 join Dalton Greene \u201822, Shelby Kruger \u201822, and Kira Schukar \u201822 as EHS officers. This group of students partners with faculty, staff, and the Twin Cities community to coordinate events for their fellow EHS members. Dalton, Shelby, and Kira are excited to welcome their new co-officers to the team!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lily Duquette \u201822 (she\/her):<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lily Duquette \u201822\u2014currently studying abroad in Prague\u2014is excited to see all of the EHS members in person when she comes back to campus in the spring. Majoring in English literature and minoring in Psychology, Lily takes part in MacYARN; <\/span>Chanter<\/span><\/i>, Macalester\u2019s literary and arts magazine; and ballroom dancing. Right now, she is reading <\/span>The Body Keeps the Score<\/span><\/i> by Besser van der Kolk. Her hometown is Bevey, Minnesota, and her favorite place on campus is the fourth floor of Old Main. Lily decided to join EHS because she wanted to become more involved with the English department after declaring her major!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabby Helf \u201823 (she\/her):<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gabby Helf \u201823 hails from Glen Echo, Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C. Majoring in English literature and minoring in religious studies, Gabby also performs with Mac Jazz and participates in Macalester Jewish Organization (MJO). Her favorite spot on campus is the fourth floor of Old Main (very popular amongst EHS officers), especially during snowy weather. This summer, she added <\/span>The Book of Longings <\/span><\/i>by Sue Monk Kidd to her list of favorite books. Gabby decided to join EHS because she \u201cwanted the opportunity to bond with other folks who love reading and nerding out about books as much as [she does]\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ella Rehman \u201823 (she\/her):<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ella Rehman \u201823 is an English major and art history minor from Burlingame, California. Besides EHS, she is a staff member on <\/span>Chanter<\/span><\/i>, and gives tours to prospective students in the Admissions office. Right now, she is reading <\/span>One Hundred Years of Solitude<\/span><\/i> by Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez. When asked why she decided to apply for an officer position, Ella writes that she wanted to take on a more active role in the English department community. This year, Ella is looking forward to the EHS induction dinner which, after a year of online EHS events, will be held in person in the fall. \u201cWe didn\u2019t have it last year,\u201d Ella writes. \u201cI\u2019m so excited to gather in person and meet some new people!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Returning Officers:<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dalton Greene \u201822 (he\/him):<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dalton Greene \u201822 grew up in Wheeling, West Virginia and is majoring in English literature with a minor in classical languages. Besides EHS, he is on the Income Inequality Committee and volunteers at the Rondo library in Saint Paul. This summer, he read <\/span>The Hand that First Held Mine <\/span><\/i>by Maggie O\u2019Farrell. Next spring, Dalton will trade places with Lily and study abroad at Oxford. When asked why he joined the EHS officers, Dalton writes that \u201cit\u2019s a very close-knit community and I think we do some really fun (if a little nerdy) things.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shelby Kruger \u201822 (she\/her):<\/b>
<\/span>Shelby Kruger \u201822 is majoring in English literature and French with a minor in Psychology. Originally from Salem, Oregon, her favorite spot on campus is the half-circle window on the fourth floor of Old Main. Besides EHS, Shelby is a captain of the club tennis team and plays in Macalester\u2019s wind ensemble and pep band. This summer, she read <\/span>Mexican Village<\/span><\/i> by Josephina Niggli. She is looking forward to meeting the newest EHS members this fall at the induction dinner!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kira Schukar \u201822 (she\/her):<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kira Schukar \u201822 is majoring in English literature with a minor in geography. Having grown up in Madison, Wisconsin, she also takes part in <\/span>Chanter<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>The Mac Weekly<\/span><\/i>, and Ultimate Frisbee at Macalester. This summer, she read <\/span>Love in the Time of Cholera<\/span><\/i> by Gabriel Garc\u00eda M\u00e1rquez. Like all of the other EHS officers, her favorite spot on campus is the fourth floor of Old Main, especially when the leaves start changing colors in the fall.
