This month, the editors at <\/span>The Words<\/span><\/i> welcome Gabriel Fisch to Wordplay!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHi, I\u2019m Gabriel Fisch (he\/him) and I\u2019m an English and Biology double major at Mac. In my poetry I like to think about family, religion, and the natural world. This particular poem was inspired by a steel art sale I visited last spring. In my free time I enjoy movement and spending time with those I love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steel Art Sale<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A sign on the side of the road read <\/span>Steel <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art Sale Ahead<\/span><\/i>. Placed just below the sign, <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

an arrow pointed to the right. I put <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

my blinker on. Adjacent to the sign,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

a turkey, cut of black steel, and painted <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

abstractly, long brush strokes, once-bright colors <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

weathered down to dull greens and blues, like fog. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My father would have liked this craftsmanship. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Down the road another sign. I followed <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

them like this for twenty minutes until<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I saw a black arch and hundreds of steel<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

creatures, painfully twisted and inlaid <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with gems. A pair of loons, red stones for eyes, <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

looked me up and down, displeased and cautious.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I watched them too, at the foot of the driveway,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

sizing up their jagged beaks and razor wings, <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

with my palms rotated slightly forward, <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

as if to offer them my sins. As if<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to open my chest for them in this place. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A priest and his dog washed through the statues. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They paused by a darkly shaped mosquito. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The priest wore plain clothes. I overheard him<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

speaking low words to the bearded artist<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

about buying two of the sharp creatures<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and hanging them around his parish.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps he thought they might ward off evil. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or, perhaps he thought they needed saving.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
