In my poetry I like to think about family, religion, and the natural world. This particular poem was inspired by a steel art sale I visited last spring. In my free time I enjoy movement and spending time with those I love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Please enjoy Gabriel\u2019s poem, Steel Art Sale.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steel Art Sale<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A sign on the side of the road read <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steel&nbsp;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Art Sale Ahead<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Placed just below the sign,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an arrow pointed to the right. I put&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">my blinker on. Adjacent to the sign,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a turkey, cut of black steel, and painted&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">abstractly, long brush strokes, once-bright colors&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">weathered down to dull greens and blues, like fog.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">My father would have liked this craftsmanship.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Down the road another sign. I followed&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">them like this for twenty minutes until<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I saw a black arch and hundreds of steel<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">creatures, painfully twisted and inlaid&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with gems. A pair of loons, red stones for eyes,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">looked me up and down, displeased and cautious.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I watched them too, at the foot of the driveway,<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sizing up their jagged beaks and razor wings,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with my palms rotated slightly forward,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as if to offer them my sins. As if<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to open my chest for them in this place.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A priest and his dog washed through the statues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They paused by a darkly shaped mosquito.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The priest wore plain clothes. I overheard him<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">speaking low words to the bearded artist<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">about buying two of the sharp creatures<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and hanging them around his parish.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perhaps he thought they might ward off evil.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Or, perhaps he thought they needed saving.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Kira Schukar &#8217;22 This month, the editors at The Words welcome Gabriel Fisch to Wordplay! \u201cHi, I\u2019m Gabriel Fisch (he\/him) and I\u2019m an English and Biology double major at Mac.
