As the semester (and the year) wraps up, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Words<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> staff wanted to take stock of the department communitie\u2019s many achievements. I reached out to English majors about what they were proud of this semester, whether that meant writing a capstone, scoring an internship or award, going to a conference, getting a creative or critical piece published, or something else they wanted to see acknowledged. Specifically, she highlighted personal narratives within the surrounding neighborhoods to create a sense of community identity and share these stories with the project manager to integrate into the final plan. This was an amazing opportunity to mix both of her backgrounds in Environmental Studies and English Lit!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Anna \u0160verclov\u00e1 \u201823 (they\/them) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was published in Passages North and Birdcoat Quarterly. Their poetry chapbook was also a finalist for the Button Poetry chapbook contest as well as the Poetry Online chapbook contest!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2022\/12\/F25FFD53-F881-4F40-9CBE-90500545A45BIMG_0379-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2022\/12\/F25FFD53-F881-4F40-9CBE-90500545A45BIMG_0379-225x300.jpg 225w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2022\/12\/F25FFD53-F881-4F40-9CBE-90500545A45BIMG_0379-768x1024.jpg 768w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2022\/12\/F25FFD53-F881-4F40-9CBE-90500545A45BIMG_0379-1152x1536.jpg 1152w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2022\/12\/F25FFD53-F881-4F40-9CBE-90500545A45BIMG_0379-1536x2048.jpg 1536w,  https:\/\/www.macalester.edu\/the-words\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/603\/2022\/12\/F25FFD53-F881-4F40-9CBE-90500545A45BIMG_0379-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Chlo\u00eb Moore \u201824 (she\/they) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">presented their paper, &#8220;The Orientalist Parallelogram,&#8221; as part of the Gender, Language, and Identity panel at the undergraduate research symposium at the Midwest Modern Language Association conference. Her poem, &#8220;The Hunger,&#8221; was published by the Water~Stone Review; they read the poem at their launch party on December 2nd. Another of Chlo\u00eb\u2019s poems, &#8220;These Are The Things That Matter To Us Now,&#8221; also appears in this semester&#8217;s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chanter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> issue. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I, <\/span><b>Zo\u00eb Roos Scheuerman \u201824 (she\/her)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, wrote and presented my International Studies capstone, \u201cBeyond the Horizons: Postnational Frontiers in Migration Literature.\u201d One of my poems, \u201cThe Way Home,\u201d was also published in the Fall 2022 issue of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chanter<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and I worked on a project for publication about W.E.B. Du Bois\u2019 connections to the Somali independence movement.
