What did you love about working with the Walker?
My favorite thing about working at the Walker was learning more about the artists that the Walker works with and to hear professional curatorial opinions. I had the opportunity to sit in on Performing Arts Department meetings, and I learned a ton about new artists, particularly in dance and music, where I have less experience. My supervisor and co-workers were all very kind about answering my questions – whether about their careers, Walker commissions or shows they liked. It was great to work with such kind people and to learn much more about experimental and interdisciplinary arts projects.

What did a typical day look like with the Walker?
At the beginning of my internship, I learned how to use InDesign, which turned out to be a very useful skill. Normally, when I would come in, I would have a list of upcoming performances that needed programs. I emailed the person working with the artist to get their bios and any other information they wanted in the program and format it appropriately. Often I included an interview or online resource for the audience if space permitted. Once that was finished, I would proofread, and give a printed copy to the PA staff that was working on that performance for review.

Toward the end of my internship, I also began researching artists who the curators had reached out to to perform for the upcoming season, which I would do in between programs.

Do you have any advice for other students looking to branch out into the performing arts scene outside of Janet Wallace?
The THDA department does a lot to let students know about available internships, and the emails that faculty and staff send out are a great resource. Also, don’t be afraid to contact companies in the Twin Cities you are interested in working with. There may not always be a job or internship available, but they may know someone or at least be able to offer some advice.
