The Glass Menagerie <\/em>was Tennessee Williams\u2019s first major play, and its success launched Williams as one of the most significant and influential playwrights of the 20th century.  \u201cA memory play,\u201d The Glass Menagerie <\/em>draws heavily on Williams\u2019s own experience as a son, brother, and young man with a wanderlust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Macalester production is staging Williams\u2019s preferred version of the script, which imagines projections and live music animating the onstage scenes of economic and emotional hardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Macalester production has benefited from a research alliance with the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, which holds Williams\u2019s correspondence, drafts of published and unpublished plays, paintings and personal effects.  Cleary spent time at the Ransom Center\u2019s Williams archives; actors were able to read scenes Williams cut from the final play, see his cross-outs and scribbles \u2014 and thereby learn more about the playwright\u2019s process as a shaper of character and story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cleary has directed plays by Naomi Wallace, Carson Kreitzer, Adrienne Kennedy, Bertolt Brecht and Arthur Miller, among many others.  She has also directed in Minneapolis in the Naked Stages Series at Pillsbury House Theatre, and with the Minnesota Jewish Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Glass Menagerie <\/em>cast members include: Sasha Hixon \u201919 from New York, N.Y., as Laura Wingfield; Melissa Feinman \u201917 from New York, N.Y., as Amanda Wingfield; John Stark \u201916 from Grinnell, Iowa, as Tom Wingfield; Anna Brujin \u201918 from Ten Boer, The Netherlands, as The Writer; Trevor Zapiecki \u201919, from Grand Rapids, Ohio, as Jim O\u2019Connor; Bridget Gustafson \u201917 from Minneapolis, Minn., as the Stage Manager; Talia Cohen \u201919 from Santa Barbara, Calif., as Assistant Stage Manager.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
