We will study the musculoskeletal human anatomy on both a theoretical and practical level. Countering the notion that the body is an assemblage of parts to be trained, strengthened, and disciplined, we will delve into various mind-body practices that illuminate anatomy from a first-person perspective. We will focus on experiential learning including embodied anatomy and movement practices that provide direct knowledge of anatomy and alignment while providing opportunities for an integrated experience from within and increased self-awareness. In-class work will be supplemented by readings, journaling, physical practice, writing and research.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frequency: Every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Course Objectives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Learn the musculoskeletal human anatomy on both a theoretical and&nbsp; practical level;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Gain knowledge of physical alignment;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Cultivate an understanding of the relationship between body and mind and&nbsp; how it can enhance your life and wellness;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Apply knowledge of anatomy to your own movement experience and&nbsp; practices (sports, fitness, dancing activities of daily living);&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Apply the scientific method to yourself by engaging in an experiential&nbsp; research project;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Increase and\/or strengthen your ability to communicate with doctors and&nbsp; other healthcare professionals.&nbsp; <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Methodology<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students will achieve course objectives through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> In-class partnering and group work observing and analyzing movement;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&nbsp;In-class drawing and writing responses;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Muscles and bone palpation to gain understanding of the structures;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A research project that applies the scientific method to oneself by investigating&nbsp; a movement or physical challenge;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A few short essays with assigned topics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Evaluation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>7 Quizzes<\/strong>: 35%\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 points each<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cumulative Final<\/strong>: 35%\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>50 points<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Research Project<\/strong>: 20%<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Journals, written assignments, and class participation<\/strong>: 10%<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THDA 250, Experiential Anatomy and the Mind Body Connection: The study of anatomy and somatics provide concrete pathways to deepening our understanding of self and the mind-body connection.
