More than fifty years ago, the Ruth and Vernon Taylor Fellowship was established at Macalester College. This endowment supports students in explorations of health, public health and health care professions. There are two types of Taylor Fellowships: the Taylor Shadowing Fellowship enables students to explore the work of health care professionals in clinical settings. The Taylor Public Health Fellowship provides stipends for students to work within the field of public health.

The Taylor Shadowing Fellowship provides a $500 stipend for students to shadow health care professionals (e.g., medical doctors, nurses, midwives, physician assistants, veterinarians, dentists, physical therapists, etc.) in clinical settings for 50 hours during the summer. Students are encouraged to explore the work of multiple professionals in various settings and to intentionally craft their experiences to compare questions of interest to them personally as they discern whether a career in health care is right for them. Students may shadow health care practitioners in any location in the world. Assistance is provided to shape the experience to suit individual interests and to establish contact with potential mentors.

The Taylor Public Health Fellowship provides a $2500 stipend to cover 9-10 weeks of half-time work in a public health environment. Students may work in a wide variety of settings: research (e.g., epidemiology), governmental agencies (e.g., state departments of health), non-profit organizations (e.g., Planned Parenthood) and others. Students may secure additional funding from other sources to extend the hours or duration of their work. Assistance is provided to find a site and supervisor/mentor or a student may pursue work or an agency on their own. Contact Liz Jansen to learn about potential sites and opportunities.
